    One of the first major events that South Northamptonshire MP and newly appointed  Environment Secretary Andrea Leadsom will attend is the Formula Student annual competition, external at Silverstone.

    Thousands of engineering students from all over the world will compete in teams to design, cost and build a racing car. 

    The competitors represent universities, colleges and apprenticeship scheme across 30 countries.

    Staff from a high school in Oundle rushed to the scene of a crash where a bus carrying 50 of their pupils tipped on its side after a crash with a car.

    The crash happened on Thursday afternoon and blocked Cotterstock Road in Oundle. The pupils were from Prince William School in Oundle that takes in children from the age of 11 to 18. 

    Duncan Mills, from the EMLC Academy which runs the school, praised staff for getting to the scene so quickly to help the injured pupils one of whom was airlifted to hospital in Nottingham.

    An investigation is under way after a bus carrying 50 school pupils from an Oundle School overturned when it crashed with a car on Thursday afternoon.

    The pupils were all from the Prince William High School in Oundle. One child was airlifted to hospital with injuries not thought to be life threatening. 

    Another child suffered a broken arm and 20 of the youngsters were treated at the scene for cuts and bruises by paramedics.

    Richard Hezlepp, the regional director of the National Farmers Union, said he is delighted at the appointment.

    He said: "We are delighted to have someone local - she is someone who understands the countryside - someone who cares deeply for it.

    "In the past, she has had a lot to do with her local farming constituents on farming issues generally and on HS2 of course."

    Friday will begin fine and dry with hazy sunshine. During the afternoon thicker cloud moving eastwards and this could produce a few spots of rain. Highs of 21C (70F).

    Corby Borough councillors will tonight discuss setting up it's own social lettings agency. 

    It says it could help with the availability of affordable homes to rent. 

    The new agency would lease properties from owners for between three and five years. They would then be let out at rents that are higher that paid by social housing tenants but below market levels. 

    The council says its officers already have experience in this area, and the move could help the housing market in Corby. 

    The report before tonight's meeting says fees charged would mean there would be no cost to taxpayers and there could be a surplus.

    Two Northamptonshire officers who have been nominated for bravery awards met new Prime Minister Theresa May today. 

    PC Rob Monk was attacked with a samurai sword while on duty in 2014 - his partner PC Gary Liddle dragged him to safety.

    The pair attended a ceremony at Downing Street this afternoon and are now on the way to attend a ceremony for all the officers who have been nominated for their bravery. 

    PC Monk said: "It was one of Mrs May's very first appointments - it was very exciting."

    A decision to set aside £500,000 to chase £10m loaned to Northampton Town could have to be looked at again.

    Opposition Labour members at Northampton Borough Council have asked for the decision to be "called in". 

    This means a separate committee has to look at the decision but ultimately cannot stop the move. Danielle Stone is the leader of the Labour group wants to see more information about the case.

    One hundred years ago the men of the 6th Northamptonshire Regiment were going over the top and into a ferocious World War One battle on the Somme.

    They attacked Trones Wood on the morning of 14 July 1916 - a place where 100 men from right across the county fought and died in the most appalling of conditions. It was a scene of fear and tragedy, but also of heroism and enormous bravery. Military historian Jon Cooksey has been back to Trones Wood with Bernie Keith, to tell the story of what happened to these Northamptonshire men a century ago.

    Today marks the centenary of the Battle of Trones Wood, external which involved men from the 6th Battalion of the Northamptonshire Regiment. 

    Sergeant William Boulter, from Kettering, was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions that day, single-handedly charging a German machine-gun post. 

    Members of his family, including his nephew Ralph Boulter, have been to see his medal this week at the at the Regimental Museum in Northampton.

    Coming out of Downing Street, South Northamptonshire MP Mrs Leadsom, who has been an energy minister and won the backing of more than 80 MPs before pulling out of the leadership race, smiled.

    In response to reporters' shouted questions asking what her new job was, she answered: "Secretary of State for Defra."

    PC Rob Monk has been talking about the moment he was stabbed in the leg by an offender with a Samurai sword.

    He said: "I thought I had a dead leg but then I felt something warm dripping... when I tried to step back my leg gave way and that's when I knew." 

    PC Monk fired his Taser at the defendant before being taken to hospital. 

    On his return to duties eight months later, he was told he would be nominated for a bravery award and would be meeting the prime minister. PC Gary Liddle, who came to his aid, was also nominated.

    PC Liddle said he was very much looking froward to the awards ceremony and visiting Downing Street, but said he would prefer not to have had to have gone through the incident.

    Gez Jackson, the chairman of the Northamptonshire Police Federation, external, said the bravery and professionalism of PC Rob Monk, who was stabbed in the leg with a samurai sword and his partner PC Gary Liddle, who took him to safety, "went above and beyond the normal call of duty."

    PC Monk, who was off work for eight months while the wound healed after the attack in 2014, said he knew it was a dangerous situation when he arrived at the scene.

    He said: "We could see the house was trashed, the roof lights were smashed, pipes were ripped out the wall."

    When he and his partner, PC Liddle, eventually opened the door they saw the room was full of weapons.

    A police officer stabbed in the line of duty with a samurai sword says at first he thought he just had a dead leg.

    PC Rob Monk was trying to negotiate with a man in Northampton who had been smashing cars with a baseball bat when he was attacked with the sword. 

    PC Gary Liddle dragged him to safety and improvised a tourniquet, while PC Monk covered him with a Taser gun. 

    Their bravery during the incident in 2014 will be recognised at a ceremony at Downing Street later today.
