  2. Raccoon dog escape: Media response 'ridiculous'published at 13:33 British Summer Time 4 June 2019

    David Pittam
    BBC News Online

The international media attention that surrounded the escape of two raccoon dogs was "ridiculous", their owner has said.

Six-year-old raccoon dogs, Gallagher and Nikami, made headlines around the world after they disappeared from their home in Clarborough, Nottinghamshire last week.

They were found nearby four days later after a rescue effort involving about 15 volunteers and six drones.

Police had described them as "potentially dangerous" and one reportedly attacked a goat and pony.

Their owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, thanked everyone for their efforts and is now building a more secure enclosure for the exotic animals.

He said he had been worried about the fact they are an invasive species but reports by some media outlets of a village "under siege" and "terrorised" by the animals was "ridiculous".

"The media was only interested in turning a 4kg dog in to a tiger," he added.

  9. Livingstone finds his red ball touchpublished at 11:19 British Summer Time 4 June 2019

    Lancashire 347-7 v Leicestershire

Lancashire all-rounder Liam Livingstone is the first to admit that he has not found it easy to readjust to red-ball cricket this season, following his time in the IPL with Karachi Kings, followed by two One-Day Cup games on his return for the Red Rose.

But he got it right at in Liverpool yesterday, as he started slowly and patiently to help rebuild Lancashire's innings from 128-5, before blossoming into a fine aggressive knock of 114, his first Championship century since August 2017.

"I've spent a lot of time playing white ball cricket," he told BBC Radio Lancashire. "And I've been beating myself up about why I can't bat for a long time and be nice and patient. It doesn't just come back that easily. But I've worked quite hard over the last couple of weeks to get back into a red-ball rhythm."

Livingstone's efforts, backed by a half-century from his fellow former Lancs skipper Steven Croft and further supplemented by a late unbroken stand of 64 between Josh Bohannon and Tom Bailey, had helped Lancs to within three runs of a fourth batting point by the close.

But it was not all toil for Leicestershire, especially their young debutant wicketkeeper Harry Swindells, who safely pouched three catches.

"Being a Leicester lad, making my debut is all I've dreamt of so it was a very proud moment for me and my family and a day I'll remember for the rest of my life," he told BBC Radio Leicester. "There is a big build up and you think about a lot of stuff beforehand but when you get out there it's just another game."

The firm added it may close the shop before 31 August if all remaining stock sells out.

  11. Ashbourne bunting cut down to make way for CCTVpublished at 10:50 British Summer Time 4 June 2019

    BBC Radio Derby

The amount of bunting on display in Ashbourne this summer has been cut by a quarter.

For three decades, streets in the town centre have had red, white and blue bunting strung across them during the warmer months to add a touch of extra colour.

However this year, the amount has been cut from eight miles to six to prevent newly-installed CCTV cameras having their view obstructed.

Sean Clayton, chair of the town's bunting committee, told BBC Radio Derby the decision had been made following discussions with the council and he felt the request was reasonable.

  12. 181 in a day at Edgbastonpublished at 10:39 British Summer Time 4 June 2019

Warwickshire 181-3 v Northants (match resumes at 11:00)

It sure was tough going at Edgbaston yesterday. Just 181 runs in 93 overs, including one particularly purple patch for the Notts bowlers in the afternoon session when the bogged-down Warwickshire batsmen made just 39 runs.

Not a great advert for Championship cricket. But the opposing captains both blamed the slow wicket.

"I've never seen a middle session like that, where only 39 runs were scored in 35 overs," Notts captain Steven Mullaney told BBC Radio Nottingham. "It was pretty extraordinary but credit to Dom Sibley. He dug in. But, if we keep bowling the way we are we are going to get a bagful of wickets. It's a slow wicket, so it's hard to score on but, at the same time, if you bowl a half-volley it goes for four and I don't think we bowled many of them."

"The guys who have batted say it's not an easy wicket," Bears captain Jeetan Patel told BBC WM. "Notts bowled extremely well in the middle session. But what our guys did - Sibley, Will Rhodes, Rob Yates, Sam Hain and Adam Hose - was proper batting. It was Test match-type cricket. We want those guys to experience it. Going forward, we want them to be playing for England."

  13. City restaurant to close after 20 yearspublished at 10:26 British Summer Time 4 June 2019

    Amy Orton
    Local Democracy Reporter

A family-run restaurant has announced it is closing down after more than 20 years of serving up Indian food in Leicester.

Flamingo Bar and Grill in Belgrave closed its doors this weekend after 24 years but a function room at the Loughborough Road venue will remain open.

The restaurant was recently forced to close for a week after city council food hygiene inspectors discovered dead mice and droppings in the kitchen but owner Jo Matharoo said that was not the reason for its permanent closure.

He said: "We don't want the closure to be people's lasting memory. That was one bad spell in more than two decades of business.

"The truth is, trading conditions are not good. The market is over saturated, our costs have more than trebled since we opened and our prices haven't even doubled in that time. It is getting harder and harder to make ends meet."

Mr Matharoo said a decision on the future of the building would be made in due course.

  14. Homeless woman 'ignored by council'published at 09:33 British Summer Time 4 June 2019

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

A Leicestershire council has been criticised for refusing to find accommodation for a mother fleeing domestic violence.

Oadby and Wigston Borough Council was rebuked by the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman for rejecting the woman's homelessness application on the grounds she lived in a different council area.

An Ombudsman investigation said the council should have agreed to help the woman, who worked in the borough and had lived there previously.

It said the authority should apologise, pay £500 to the woman for distress caused and retrain staff to identify which applications should be accepted.

Ombudsman Michael King said: "It is important for councils to be aware of their homelessness obligations and properly assess when they have a duty towards people.

"It is not enough to pass the responsibility onto other councils simply because the person has applied to two separate councils for help."

The council is due to hold an extraordinary meeting later to decide whether to accept the Ombudsman's findings, with a pre-meeting report suggesting the authority still maintains it acted lawfully.

He told BBC Radio Nottingham: "We missed the flight by about five or ten minutes. We got to the gate and they'd closed."

Last night dozens of people took to the streets outside the Brian Clough statue in Nottingham to demonstrate against his presidency.

Tens of thousands of protesters, including climate change and women's rights campaigners, are expected to gather in the capital to voice their opposition to Trump's policies.

Viv Carnier, from Belper, is travelling to London by coach to attend the protest.

She said: "He [Trump] likes to ramp up conflict rather than dampen it down and I feel we need to challenge that.

"We need to look for common ground between people rather than be so divisive. A leader has responsibility."
