  10. Review into man's starvation death 'unacceptable'published at 14:43 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2020

    PA Media

Concerns have been raised over the make-up of a panel set up to review the case of a Nottingham man found starved to death months after the government stopped his disability benefit.

Errol Graham, 57, weighed four-and-a-half stone (28.5kg) when his body was found by bailiffs who broke into his council flat to evict him in June 2018.

Marsha de Cordova, shadow minister for disabled people, told MPs the Department of Work and Pensions had agreed to look into Mr Graham's death, but the panel will consist solely of senior civil servants from within the department.

Earlier this week a DWP spokesperson confirmed the incident had been referred to its Serious Case Panel.

But Ms de Cordova told the House of Commons: "It has emerged that the panel will only consist of senior civil servants from within the Department for Work and Pensions, and it is unclear whether the panel's conclusions will be made public.

"The lack of scrutiny and independence of this panel is unacceptable."

She also called for Work and Pensions Secretary Therese Coffey to give a statement on the matter in the Commons "given the public interest and seriousness of this issue".
