  15. Surrogate mother backs proposed law changepublished at 15:19 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January 2020

    Amy Woodfield
    BBC News

A surrogate mother, who is helping a Nottinghamshire couple have a baby, said she looks at surrogacy as "extreme babysitting".

Jemma Black has three children of her own and has had one surrogate baby already.

She started off by anonymously donating her eggs but then she joined Surrogacy UK.

It was with this organisation that she met the couple whose baby she has gone on to carry.

Laws in the UK make it illegal to advertise for a surrogate or pay more than expenses to carry a baby.

This could soon change as the government plans to lift the ban on advertising surrogacy services.

There are fears the potential law change would put more women at risk of exploitation.

Ms Black told BBC Radio Nottingham she has had a really positive experience with surrogacy and compared it to giving blood and donating organs.

"I grew her, and I'm so proud that I grew her, she's brought joy to everybody's life," she said.

Ms Black said there was never any issue over bonding with the baby.

"I was a host surrogate so there was no genetic link to me and my surrogate baby - I just grew her for nine months," she said.

She also had the approval of her children, who refer to her as a "hero" who makes families for others.

A draft bill is expected to be published next year.
