The leader of Derby City Council has pledged the authority's support for Intu as the shopping centre giant looks set to go into administration today.
Their shopping centre in Derby is part-owned with investor Cale Street Investments, who purchased their 50% stake in the centre in April last year.
Chris Poulter said the council will "offer our assistance to help Intu's local team at this challenging time and to the administrators, if they are appointed, to ensure a strong future for the Derby centre".
Mr Poulter said they had been in regular talks with Intu Derby's management team in recent weeks.
"We will now be seeking fresh talks to understand what any move into administration might mean for Derby and to offer help wherever we can," he said in a statement.
"Intu's Derby centre is, of course, in a different position to many of the rest of the group's businesses in that it is jointly-owned. It is also worth noting that the Derby centre has very strong management and a good track record of success."

Storms are set to hit the East Midlands today and could cause flooding in some areas.
The Environment Agency has issued two flood alerts - meaning flooding is possible - for the waterways around Loughborough and the River Trent tributaries in Nottinghamshire.
Not everyone will experience storms and it will be a warm and humid day for the most part.
But where they do occur, frequent lightning and torrential downpours are possible.
Met Office meteorologist Craig Snell said: "Not everyone will see a storm, but if you catch one, you will certainly know about it."

Intu already had massive debts, but the impact of coronavirus means they're now in a more precarious position than ever.
The company has warned it could mean sites like the Victoria Centre having to close, but there's even more uncertainty for what it could mean for the redevelopment of the Broadmarsh, which is currently on hold.
I've asked the city council, which owns the land, what contingency plans there are if the company goes bust – they've simply said they remain committed to seeing the site developed and they're in ongoing dialogue with Intu.
Geoff Williams, from Nottingham BID, says it's still unclear what impact it will have on the Broadmarsh centre but suggested Nottingham residents could crowdfund to buy it.
"I imagine when a receiver gets hold of it, it isn't actually a great deal of money," he said.

The likely administration of the owners of shopping centres in Nottingham and Derby is "not a huge surprise", a retail expert has said.
Nelson Blackley, from Nottingham Trent University, told BBC Radio Nottingham the situation was "not a huge surprise" but would be a "messy restructuring process" for Intu.
He said the company had a very complicated structure with different lenders holding the upper hand on individual shopping centres.
"I think it will take some time before the impact on shopping centres is truly known," he added.

An outdoor pool manager has said it "beggars belief" his facility cannot open while people can swim in lakes and go to pubs.
Michael Wellington runs the Hathersage Swimming Pool in Derbyshire and was hoping to welcome swimmers back on 4 July.
He said he had planned a way he thought they could open safely, but the government announced all pools will stay shut until further notice.
He said: "[Boris Johnson] didn't give any reason... and it doesn't make any sense to us.
"He's opened bars and pubs and you can go swim in a lake, a river or the sea but not in a chlorinated pool with life guards? It beggars belief."
Olympic champion Adam Peaty has joined calls for pools to be reopened.
A government spokeswoman said they hope pools will be able to open in mid-July but they have to manage all risks.

A memorial bench marking the 100th anniversary of World War One has been "mindlessly vandalised" with graffiti at a village park in Leicestershire.
It was installed to dedicate an open space in Countesthorpe known as a "Centenary Field" - a project launched by the Duke of Cambridge in 2014.
The space, which is adjacent to the graveyard of St Andrew's Church and the village's war memorial, is used for fetes and fun days.
Countesthorpe Parish Council said: "The disrespect that this act of vandalism has shown to those who lost their lives in World War One and our war heroes, makes this incident even more saddening."
It added that repairs would be made and Leicestershire Police said the incident was being investigated.

A huge mess was left on the grounds of the Chatsworth estate yesterday after reports a large group of young people gathered and a fight broke out.
Derbyshire Police said they were called just after 16:30 on Wednesday to reports "a large group of youths were gathered by the River Derwent and a fight had broken out".
A spokeswoman said when officers arrived, the group had "moved on".
The force said it is aware of a video being circulated on social media of the fight between two people and asked for anyone with any information to get in touch.
A nearby resident who found the mess this morning said the rubbish was not just by the main road and river, but over the whole estate.
Guy Buckley said: "We didn't realise just how bad it was down by the river until we got down to it."
He said staff from the estate and volunteers spent almost two hours clearing the litter.
A Chatsworth spokesman confirmed it had "experienced some anti-social behaviour and illegal parking by a minority of visitors" to Chatsworth Park.
He said patrols and security staff had been increased and thanked police for their assistance.
