The firm hired to oversee the demolition of the Broadmarsh shopping centre in Nottingham has announced job redundancies as a result of the "cancellation" of the project.

Coleman Group said it would carry out a business restructure after work was halted on the centre's redevelopment amid the Covid-19 pandemic and owner Intu's financial problems.

The firm said it was their "largest single project".

"It is devastating that good people will be leaving us as a result of this restructure but like many other businesses we have faced the most difficult and challening trading conditions of our lifetime," said group chief executive Mark Coleman.

A spokesperson at intu said: “In March, we paused the development work at intu Broadmarsh because of the Covid-19 pandemic and then more recently due to our financial position.

"We can’t re-open our doors with construction at a standstill. Safety is always our priority, and for that reason we have temporarily closed the centre."

Bennerley Viaduct is to be closed to visitors as work continues to turn it into a public walkway.

The landmark, on the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire border, will be fenced off as construction work resumes to repair the wrought iron structure and create viewing platforms and a path underneath.

Work at the Grade II listed viaduct began in March but was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It is now expected to be completed by early next year.

    Bennerley Viaduct

The viaduct has been used as an unofficial walkway for decades and was last year added to a global list of "at-risk" heritage sites.

"Hundreds of local people and visitors have become used to walking over the viaduct since it was decommissioned in the 1970s," said Kieran Lee, from the Friends of Bennerley Viaduct group.

"They can help to make sure that they and thousands of others can continue to enjoy its full glory when the project is completed by staying away for the time being."

  7. Rebekah Vardy launches libel proceedings amid stories rowpublished at 12:53 British Summer Time 23 June 2020

    PA Media

Rebekah Vardy has launched libel proceedings against Coleen Rooney after a row over stories allegedly leaked to a tabloid newspaper about Mrs Rooney's personal life.

In October, the 34-year-old claimed Mrs Vardy's Instagram account was the source of the stories, with the saga being dubbed "Wagatha Christie".

Mrs Vardy, 38, who is married to Leicester City striker Jamie, denied any wrongdoing and later said the stress of their public dispute had caused her to have severe anxiety attacks.

Mrs Rooney, the wife of ex-England footballer Wayne, said she had spent five months attempting to work out who was sharing information from her personal account.

She claims she worked out it was Mrs Vardy by blocking everyone else's account but hers.

At the time, Mrs Vardy said third parties had access to her Instagram account and an expert was working to discover who could have been behind the leaks.

Court records indicate Mrs Vardy filed her claim with the High Court on 12 June.

No date has been set for a court hearing, but the case will proceed to a trial unless a settlement is reached between the parties.

  11. Biscuit factory staff worried after Covid-19 casespublished at 11:06 British Summer Time 23 June 2020

    Amy Orton
    Local Democracy Reporter

Staff at a biscuit factory in Leicester have said they are worried about going to work after a "small number of positive cases" of Covid-19.

An employee at the Pladis factory in South Wigston, which manufactures for McVitie's, said at least five colleagues from one team had tested positive this week.

"Most workers have no option but to risk going into work, also a lot of the factory employees are BAME workers who are more at risk and many are from deprived areas," the employee, who wished to remain anonymous, said.

"Shouldn't the firm consider its workforce? It is putting its staff, who are mainly women of ethnic backgrounds, at risk."

The worker said the factory had remained open throughout lockdown and colleagues were scared to take time off work.

They decided to speak out after seeing news of a local spike in cases in Leicester.

A Pladis spokesman said they could not confirm numbers but emphasised safety measures are in place.

"Like many businesses, we have experienced a relatively small number of positive cases of Covid-19 among our colleagues," he said.

"Over the last few months, we've followed all the official advice, stepped up our cleaning regime throughout our site and put in place comprehensive social distancing measures."

He said the factory, which employs 250 people, had implemented its own test and trace procedure and staff would be given full pay when self-isolating or awaiting test results, while anyone showing symptoms was encouraged to stay at home.

Public Health England said it was aware of the cases at the factory "and supporting the companies involved".

    Roy Dyer

A man who was threatened with deportation amid the Windrush scandal last year has now been given a British passport and offered compensation after a battle to prove he can live in the UK.

Roy Dyer came to Nottingham aged eight, from Dominica in the Caribbean on his mother's British passport.

However, by the time he went to apply for a passport himself, Dominica had become independent and in 2012 he was detained at Gatwick Airport, losing his right to work and use the NHS, which he said left him feeling "worthless".

He is one of 200 people in Nottingham who asked for help to gain citizenship and they received an apology from the government and a British passport in March.

    Roy Dyer

    "It was terrifying," he said.

"I was totally helpless. I was in limbo, I didn't know what to do and was worried all the time."

For National Windrush Day on Monday, several events were planned to mark 72 years since 1,000 Caribbean workers were invited by the UK government to help rebuild the country.

In Nottingham, the Council House was lit up green and in Leicester, an exhibition about the Windrush Generation opened online.
