The Met Office raised the level today as health authorities encouraged those most vulnerable - many of whom have been shielding during the lockdown - to take extra care.

The amber level three - which is in place for the West and East Midlands - requires social and healthcare services to target specific actions at high-risk groups.

People have been advised to keep cool and stay hydrated where possible and take precautions against "exceptionally high" UV levels.

Shoppers have also been advised to be aware they could be forced to spend extra time in the sun as a result of social distancing measures.

Cannabis plants have been found growing in woods in Nottinghamshire, police have said.

Police made the discovery after searching for children, who were believed to be inhaling laughing gas, in Watnall Wood on 12 June.

A "strong smell" led them to nine large and 11 small cannabis plants with labels tied to them with the word "Candy".

PCSO Lara Holbrook said it was a "highly potent" strain of cannabis known as "Kandy Kush", which can be grown outdoors without hydroponics.

“I believe the plants had been there for some time as they were waist high on me," she said.

“A drainage system had been dug out for the plants which had chicken wire around them.”

The plants were "dismantled" and a note was left in the area informing whoever grew them that patrols would continue, the force said. No arrests have been made.

  13. Leicester MP criticises Health Secretary on testingpublished at 09:11 British Summer Time 24 June 2020

    PA Media

The lack of local data for areas affected by a spike in coronavirus cases has shown up faults in the government's testing and tracing system, Leicester South MP Jonathan Ashworth said.

The Shadow Health Secretary labelled Health Secretary Matt Hancock the "Eric Morecambe of the Commons" before describing the test, trace and isolate strategy as "more like a wing and a prayer".

Speaking during Commons health and social care questions, Mr Ashworth said GPs in Leicester "still can't refer people for testing" despite a recent rise in cases in the area, with NHS staff "still not tested regularly".

Mr Hancock accused his Labour counterpart of presenting "opposition for opposition's sake", adding the government is "making sure that we use technology to its best possible effect".

    Quote Message

In the last few days I've been listening to his excuses. He's like the Eric Morecambe of the Commons - he has been playing all the right notes, just not necessarily in the right order."
