    A Bridgnorth runner, who takes parts in marathons dressed as Puff the Asthma Dragon, has been shortlisted to be "Britain's most colourful character" in an online poll., external

    Dana Power took up running aged 55 and recently completed his 11th London Marathon.

    The nine finalists are all described as "people over 60 who are living life to the full, redefining retirement and doing anything but acting their age" and the winner gets a holiday for two.

    The MP for Shrewsbury has recently returned from a visit to Paris, as a member of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee and he says relations with French politicians are good - despite the EU referendum vote.

  4. All 320 jobs go as coach firm enters administrationpublished at 14:24 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

    Administrators for GHA Coaches say all 320 staff have been made redundant after the firm ceased trading yesterday.

    Accountancy firm Grant Thornton revealed the company was a family business, run by directors Gareth and Arwyn Lloyd Davies, and that they recently received a winding up petition from HM Revenue and Customs for unpaid taxes.

    The administrators say the directors tried to get an emergency funding package but were unsuccessful, so they placed the company in administration.

  5. Church holds memorial to remember WW1 battlepublished at 14:14 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

    St Chad's church in Shrewsbury is flying its flag at half mast today and holding a memorial service to remember soldiers from Shropshire who died in a World War One battle 100 years ago today.

    The King's Shropshire Light Infantry sustained its heaviest losses of WW1 in the Battle of Bazentin Ridge on 14 July 1916.

    Eight officers and 163 men died, and hundreds more were wounded in the Battle.

    Pokemon Go has hit the UK, so look out for people wandering around Shropshire like zombies staring at their mobile phones.

    The game asks people to search for and capture virtual creatures, which you can see through your smartphone screen, with the real world in the background.

    I've signed up and discovered my first Pokemon was sat right in front of me, on my desk.

  7. Football: Telford and Bridgnorth meet in a friendlypublished at 13:36 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

    AFC Telford United will be playing a friendly at Bridgnorth Town tonight and giving a run-out to some of their new signings.

    Bridgnorth are managed by John Psaras, who had a brief spell in charge at the Bucks recently.

    On Saturday, Telford welcome recently relegated Aston Villa to the Bucks Head, with a midday kickoff.

  8. Names to be added to Ludlow war memorialpublished at 13:10 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

    Families from Ludlow who lost loved ones in the two world wars and the Korean conflict will see their relatives' names honoured today.

    Ludlow's had a war memorial on Castle Square for the past 16 years, but the names of the fallen have only just been inscribed.

    The additions will be unveiled at a ceremony this afternoon, with local schoolchildren reading out the names of the war dead.

  10. Councillor describes coach firm administration as 'bolt out of blue'published at 12:18 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

    The announcement that GHA coaches has gone into administration seems to have taken Shropshire Council by surprise.

    The councillor responsible for transport, Simon Jones described it as "a shock, a bolt out of the blue",

    Mr Jones has also praised the bus company Arriva, which has taken over four of the services previously operated by GHA.

    Efforts are still being made to find someone willing to run two other services, and coaches to three special needs schools.

  11. Football: Hibernian to visit Shrewsbury Townpublished at 12:02 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

    The Scottish Cup holders Hibernian will be visiting Shrewsbury Town for a friendly on 31 July.

    The date will also be the club's annual Open Day and it see a return to Shrewsbury for former striker Grant Holt.

  13. Ice Hockey: Tigers to play pre-season games against Milton Keynespublished at 11:25 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

    Telford Tigers will start their pre-season with home and away fixtures against Milton Keynes Lightning.

    The away game will be played on Saturday 27 August, with the Tigers at home the following day.

    Milton Keynes knocked Telford out of the play-offs last season, so they will have a point to prove.

  14. Council plugs gaps after coach company goes out of businesspublished at 11:07 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

    Shropshire Council has been able to get a number of bus routes running again, after GHA Coaches announced they had gone out of business.

    Arriva will take over the following routes:

    • 36 Bridgnorth to Shrewsbury
    • 576 Oswestry to Shrewsbury
    • 96 Telford to Shrewsbury
    • 511 Whitchurch to Shrewsbury

    Meanwhile Lakeside Coaches will take on the school bus service from Kinton to the Corbet school and Caradoc Coaches will take children from Cound to the William Brookes.

    A teacher from Telford, who had to abandon his attempt to follow in the footsteps of Dawley's Captain Matthew Webb says he's disappointed, but won't give up trying to swim the Channel. 

    Webb was the first man to swim the stretch of water in 1875.

  18. Two village schools could closepublished at 09:35 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

    Two village schools in Shropshire could close as part of a planned merger. 

    Governors want to shut Hope Primary and St Mary's in Westbury in just over a year's time, with the children moving to an enlarged site at Worthen. 

    Letters have been sent to parents, and meetings will be held at all three schools to explain the proposal.
