  1. BBC Weather Watchers: Good weather for duckspublished at 14:49 British Summer Time 13 July 2016

    The clouds appear to be getting lighter across the county, looking at the photos sent in today by the BBC Weather Watchers.

    This one was taken at Norton.

    Prince George, the son of the Duke and the Duchess of Cambridge, has been taking a close-up look at an RAF Shawbury helicopter.

    These photos were taken while he was at the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford at the weekend.

    The man who showed the prince around, Flight Lieutenant Jim Hobkirk, said he was fascinated by the tail rotor.

  3. Council forecasts help identify budget savingspublished at 14:18 British Summer Time 13 July 2016

    The leader of Shropshire Council, Malcolm Pate, says they have "reappraised the forecasts" for adult services and children's services to help meet their target of cutting £60m over the next three years.

    Overall, the latest package of budget savings accounts for just over £10m by 2019.

    In all £34m savings still need to be found over that period.

    Mr Pate also said he wanted to work positively with town and parish councils, to see if they could take on the costs of running libraries and leisure services, but is giving them another 12 months to develop those plans.

    He said it was "irrelevant" that this new deadline would take them past the next round of Shropshire Council elections.

  4. Councillors approve swimming pool movepublished at 13:59 British Summer Time 13 July 2016

    Plans to move Shrewsbury's swimming pool to Sundorne Road have been approved by Shropshire councillors.

    Protestors who want to keep the pool at The Quarry were at the authority's cabinet meeting, where it was also agreed that the pool could remain at its current site, if someone comes up with suitable proposals in the next 12 months.

     Councillor Stuart West, the member responsible for leisure, reassured the campaigners, saying: "Whatever happens today, nobody's going tomorrow to put a spade down in Sundorne."

    Shropshire's roads will have to cope with some huge cargo later this month, as giant wind turbines move through the county.

    Lorries will be taking sections of the turbines through Gobowen, Oswestry and Pant to sites south of Welshpool. 

    Some of the pieces will weigh 30 tonnes.

  7. Champions League: TNS defender says draw was 'massive performance'published at 12:49 British Summer Time 13 July 2016

    The 0-0 draw TNS earned against the Cypriot champions Apoel Nicosia last night was one of their best European results in recent years and defender Simon Spender described it as a "massive performance".

    He had to miss the tie through injury, but said it was the best they have played in a while and that defensively they were very solid.

    Spender said TNS came close to carving out some opportunities of their own at the other end and described European competition as "the next step for us" after winning the Welsh league for the past five seasons.

    It will be a mostly dry afternoon in Shropshire with the chance of a bit of rain towards the end of the day.

  11. Shropshire council draws up new cutback planspublished at 11:17 British Summer Time 13 July 2016

    Shropshire Council is considering adjusting its future spending plans to save another £10m, to help it meet its target of saving £60m over the next three years.

    Council leader Malcolm Pate told BBC Radio Shropshire this morning that they had looked again at their budget plans and in "certain areas we found a little bit of leeway".

    And it means plans to get town and parish councils to pay for some Shropshire Council services will be put off for another 12 months.

  12. Channel swimmer forced to abandon attemptpublished at 10:58 British Summer Time 13 July 2016

    A Dawley man who's been trying to swim across the English Channel this morning has abandoned his attempt two and a half hours in, due to bad weather.

    Teacher Ian Preece had been hoping to recreate the feat first done by Dawley legend Captain Matthew Webb who became the first man to swim it unaided in 1875.

    He won't be trying again today and might now have to wait another 10 months to make another attempt.

    Extra police patrols have been ordered in parts of south Shropshire after a spate of night-time rural break-ins. 

    Burglars have been targeting unlocked sheds, barns and other outbuildings and taking tools, farm machinery and diesel.

    A project to keep Shropshire's military veterans away from crime, has been set up, with a grant of £299,840 from the Armed Forces Covenant.

    The Remember Veterans initiative will help ex-military personnel access training and employment, provide support from peers and a referral and helpline service.

    It has been created by the Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion and his office will run it.

    Roadworks costing £500,000 are due to start in the centre of Newport later this month, once schools have broken up for the summer. 

    There will be road closures and extra traffic lights in the town centre until the first week in September. 

    Resurfacing work will start in Upper Bar on 25 July taking in most of the surrounding roads and Lower Bar before ending in Meadow Road.

    The police have revealed that a 26-year-old man had part of his ear bitten-off during an attack in Telford, last month. 

    It happened late one night on the old A5 between Oakengates and Ketley. 

    The severed ear was found, and reattached in hospital.
