    The big seasonal getaway is moving up a gear and today is one of the busiest days of the year for the motorway network.

  2. Charity gets extra cash to help north Shropshire villagespublished at 13:26 British Summer Time 22 July 2016

    The Shropshire Rural Communities charity has got extra funding this summer to support people from Gobowen, Weston Rhyn and St Martins.

    The group runs Wheels2Work, which helps people with transport issues get to work, and also has funding to help agricultural apprentices.

    After last weekend's critical win over Staffordshire Surge, the Revolution head to Lincolnshire this Sunday, to take on the 0-8 Bombers.

    Victory this weekend and in the final match against the Warhawks would see Shropshire reach the playoffs - as long as the Falcons keep their 100% record going with a win over Staffordshire Surge the following weekend.

    The Bombers have conceded more points this season than any team outside the Premier divisions and scored just 82.

  5. Clifton cinema group set to announce new planspublished at 12:25 British Summer Time 22 July 2016

    The people behind a scheme to convert Wellington's old Clifton Cinema into a "centre for the arts" say they're not giving up their campaign. 

    The building was last used by the retailer Dunelm and the The Clifton Community Arts Centre, external group's been working behind the scenes to find out whether it's been sold, and who owns it.

    The group says it will announce the Way Ahead for the project at its annual shareholders meeting at Wellington Civic offices at 18:30.

  6. Long-serving Telford teacher retirespublished at 12:00 British Summer Time 22 July 2016

    A Telford head teacher who has been in his post for the past 29 years retires today.

    Randlay Primary School and Nursery believes Bromley Jones is the longest-serving head in the Telford and Wrekin area and has been holding a week of celebrations to say thank you.

    Mr Jones says he made the decision to leave last September, partly because there were changes at the school that could take up to five years to see through and he felt it was right for someone else to come in.

    But he also described it as "one of the biggest decisions I've made in my life" and said he would probably miss the job when the new school year starts in September.

  8. Football: Telford manager sets out expectations for new seasonpublished at 11:23 British Summer Time 22 July 2016

    The AFC Telford United manager, Rob Smith, told a supporters meeting last night that he was excited about the new season and that a mid-table finish wouldn't be bad.

    He also talked about the team spirit there is at the club now and that the players have a smile on their faces these days.

    Telford have friendlies coming up against Wrexham and Birmingham City under-21s before the season kicks off at home to AFC Fylde on 6 August.

    Shropshire Council has been accused of "mismanagement and corporate failure" by the authority's only Green Party councillor.

    Duncan Kerr criticised the money spent on the council's failed private arm IP&E and the money spent on allowances while services are cut.

    He has proposed a return to the old system of district councils. The leader of Shropshire Council, Malcolm Pate says abolishing layers of local government has saved £160m.

  10. Growth in child sex offences higher in Shropshire Council areapublished at 10:43 British Summer Time 22 July 2016

    The growth in the number of reported sex offences against children has been slower in the Telford area than in the rest of the county.

    New government statistics, external show reported sex offences in the Shropshire Council area more than trebled between 2011-12 and 2015-16 - in the Telford and Wrekin area they doubled.

    The statistics also show there were 269 reports of sexual offences, including rape, against children under the age of 13 across the county last year.

  12. Football: 'Progress' in AFC Telford United investment talkspublished at 09:46 British Summer Time 22 July 2016

    AFC Telford United say they're still talking to potential investors to help take the club forward but the chairman Ian Dosser says they won't "give the club away to someone who isn't suitable". 

    The supporter-owned club is about to start a second successive season in the second tier of non-league football.

    Two new directors are being appointed. Luke Fearnall and the former Market Drayton Town goalkeeper Andy Pryce have taken up the positions.

    Mr Pryce runs a local building firm in Wellington, and helped arrange the new kit sponsorship deal. 

    On Monday, a new commercial manager will start work at the New Bucks Head. Lee Griffiths's CV includes a spell working at Northamptonshire County Cricket Club. 

  13. Ellesmere could get Shropshire's first "community led" housing projectpublished at 09:17 British Summer Time 22 July 2016

    A group called A Fairer Society has outline permission for 57 homes on the site of the old railway station yard, off Brownlow Road in Ellesmere. 

    It's having an exhibition at Ellesmere Town Hall, tomorrow and says the project will be "community led".

    One of the group's founders, Peter Burke, hopes local people will have an early involvement in the design work.

  14. Rise in child sex offences 'grim' readingpublished at 08:57 British Summer Time 22 July 2016

    The NSPCC has described a rise in the number of recorded sex offences against children in Shropshire as "grim". 

    The number has almost tripled since publicity surrounding the conviction of seven men from Telford four years ago, for a series of of offences against vulnerable teenage girls.

    Government figures show that there were 196 sexual offences against children in the Telford and Shropshire Council areas in 2011-2012. 

    That rose to 551 offences in the last financial year.
