  1. Replica villa to open to the publicpublished at 17:54 British Summer Time 20 July 2016

    A replica of a Tuscan villa in the grounds of Attingham Park will be opened up to the public for a few days, later this week.

    Cronkhill was built to remind the owners of the estate of their Grand Tours around Europe and has been under scaffolding for the last three years, so that workmen could replace the rendering on the outside of the building.

    Repairs have also carried out to the roof, windows and stonework and now a final coat of paint is being applied, before the scaffolding is removed next month.

    On Friday, the contractors will be on hand to talk about the restoration project and it will remain open to visitors on Saturday and Sunday.

    The manager, Craig Harrison, explained that they've been training for eight weeks and will be asked to report back on Monday.

  3. Council offers to help GKN staffpublished at 17:39 British Summer Time 20 July 2016

    The 251 GKN workers who are facing redundancy are being offered support, external by Telford and Wrekin Council.

    It says its careers service will try to find them alternative jobs and give them help in applying for posts.

    The council also says it is working to bring new investment into the area and is talking to a number of companies, including some in the car parts industry.

  5. Landowners and farmers warn Pokemon userspublished at 17:12 British Summer Time 20 July 2016

    Pokemon Go players are being warned not to trespass on private land, by an organisation which represents farmers and rural landowners.

    The Country Land & Business Association, external (CLA) says people hunting the digital beasts could be at risk from real-life livestock or farm machinery and could damage crops.

    The CLA also says members have already started to report trespassing and wants the game's makers to act quickly and remove Pokemon characters which appear on private property.

  7. West Midlands MEP 'would back return of the death penalty'published at 16:53 British Summer Time 20 July 2016

    West Midlands MEP and UKIP leadership candidate Bill Etheridge says there should be a referendum on the death penalty and he would back its reintroduction.  

    He said: “For my part I believe that the very worst crimes deserve the ultimate penalty and I propose that those who murder and rape children, those that commit sadistic acts of murder and torture and those that commit acts of murder through terrorism against our country or our people should be subject to the death penalty at the discretion of the presiding judge."

    The MEP, who stood in 2012 as UKIP’s Police & Crime Commissioner candidate in the West Midlands Police force area, also said three strikes should mean "life behind bars for violent criminals".

    The death penalty is opposed by the UK government, Amnesty International, the UN, the European Union and 16 US states.

    Shropshire's libraries are the latest to join in with the Pokemon Go craze which has seen people hanging out in public places, hoping to catch virtual animals.

    Shropshire Council says the Pokemon can be found in amongst the bookshelves in many of the county libraries, and points out they have free wifi.

    A Shropshire school has withdrawn its plans to improve its shooting facilities after they were met with a storm of opposition, external – including a petition featuring more than 100 signatures.

    Changes to the opening times at the libraries still run by Shropshire Council will be discussed at a meeting of councillors, external next week.

    The authority is trying to save £585,000 from its libraries budget over the next three years and believes reducing the opening hours could save an annual £52,000.

    The plans were based on an analysis of visitor numbers, which found early mornings, evenings and Saturday afternoons were the quietest.

    A ceremony's been held to mark the end of a 40-year battle to stop homes being built on a piece of land on Paddock Mound in Ketley.

    The 11-acre site, off Shepherd's Lane, was created in the 18th and 19th Century as a result of ironstone mining.

    Some £30,000 has already been spent on it, to make the paths wheelchair accessible, and it is expected to be designated a local nature reserve by Telford and Wrekin Council.

    In the March-to-May period, 165,000 people were out of work in the region - an increase of 13,000 on the previous quarter. 

    In contrast, figures for the whole of the UK show a fall of 54,000 to 1.65 million.

    A man in Market Drayton has been arrested following a police raid.

    The property in Longlands Lane was targeted early Tuesday morning resulting in the seizure of what is thought to be heroin along with other drug paraphernalia.

    A 48-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of intent to supply.

  17. Funding bids to be discussed by Local Enterprise Partnershippublished at 13:57 British Summer Time 20 July 2016

    Schemes like the Flaxmill in Shrewsbury are waiting to hear if their bids for funding will be taken up by the Marches Local Enterprise Partnership, external

    The funding body is meeting to decide which projects it will take forward to the government and a complete list is expected to be published by the end of the month.

    Around £40m has been bid for in Shropshire, including £7.5m to build more than 1,300 new homes in Newport, £13m to create an innovation park in Oswestry, with 900 new homes and £2m to develop the Flaxmill.

    Police in the West Midlands are warning about the dangers of carrying replica guns after a spate of scares prompted by fake firearms.

    Armed officers have attended more than 80 incidents in the last three months where people were spotted with the BB guns.
