    Trade union Unite says the job losses at Telford's GKN factory in Hadley Castle are a "body blow to the Shropshire economy".

    It says the 230 who are being made redundant because a contract with Jaguar Land Rover has come to an end include welders and engineers and their last day is expected to be 18 August.

    The union said it was disappointed GKN had not secured more contracts to keep the workers employed beyond the end of the JLR deal.

    A weather warning for thunderstorms across the West Midlands, external is in force from 17:00.

    The Met Office says while most places will miss the worst, it's warning of localised flash flooding, lightning, hail and strong winds.

    It might look tempting to take a dip in the River Severn, especially today with temperatures getting above 30C.

    But the Environment Agency is warning that the weir in Shrewsbury is an unsafe place to swim.

  10. Job losses at car parts maker GKN in Telfordpublished at 15:47 British Summer Time 19 July 2016

    Car parts maker GKN has confirmed 251 jobs will go at its Telford factory.

    The company announced in December the jobs were at risk and it has been unable to find work for 230 people employed to build chassis platforms for Land Rover after that contract came to an end.

    Another 21 redundancies have been announced after the company decided to move a hybrid power project for buses to Birmingham.

    About 350 workers will remain.

    Wellington police say another cygnet has died at the Tee Lake and Dothill Pools.

    They say a spaniel-type dog was seen entering the water yesterday, killing one of two remaining cygnets. The other is already at the Cuan wildlife sanctuary with an injury.

    A woman who worked for a council-run company that was closed this year is charged with fraud.

    A woman who worked for Shropshire Council's private company I, P & E has been charged with fraud by abuse of position. 

    Penelope Wilkinson, aged 42 and of Colley Close, Shrewsbury, is due before magistrates in Telford next month.

    I, P & E was set up by the authority to bring in extra revenue through out-sourcing services. 

    Once the decision to close it was made, Shropshire Council commissioned an internal health-check of the business. During this work, information was referred to the police for further investigation.

  14. Cricket: Shropshire slip to third after defeatpublished at 14:17 British Summer Time 19 July 2016

    It took Berkshire just one hour and 15 minutes to wrap up victory over Shropshire today.

    The result sees Shropshire slip to third in the Western Division table, with Cornwall and Berkshire going above them.

    The New Saints are in Cyprus for the second leg of their Champions League qualifier. 

    They're underdogs against Apoel Nicosia but are buoyed by holding the Cypriot champions 0-0 in Oswestry last week.

    Berkshire have wrapped up victory over Shropshire at Shifnal, with six wickets to spare.

    Earlier, Shropshire were bowled out for 193, leaving the visitors chasing just 91 to win.

    It's the first defeat of the season for Shropshire, who started the match on top of their division in the Minor Counties Championship.

    A documentary, focusing on the so-called Shrewsbury 24, is to be made. 

    They were charged with offences relating to picketing building sites in 1972.

    Six were sent to prison including the actor Ricky Tomlinson.

    He's always maintained his innocence and is now producing a documentary about it.
