  1. West Mercia 'looking at options' over body cameraspublished at 10:27 British Summer Time 29 September 2016

    Researchers say police body-cams are working.

    The Cambridge University study showed complaints by members of the public against officers fell by 93% over 12 months compared with the year before.

    Almost 2,000 officers across four UK forces and two US police departments were monitored for the project.

    West Mercia Police don't routinely use them, but the force says it's "looking at its options".  

  2. Town councillors unhappy over swimming pool debatepublished at 10:15 British Summer Time 29 September 2016

    Shrewsbury town councillors claim they've been silenced in Shropshire Council debates on the future of the Quarry swimming pool.

    Yesterday, Shropshire Council's cabinet backed the idea of building a new pool in Sundorne, but councillors who sit on both authorities were prevented from speaking.

    The authority's legal officer said it was to prevent a potential conflict of interests.

  4. Hospital Trust under pressure to save as winter approachespublished at 09:47 British Summer Time 29 September 2016

    Spending less on agency staff at the Royal Shrewsbury and Princess Royal hospitals is among money saving measures being considered today. 

    The NHS Trust that runs them is meeting to consider its multimillion-pound deficit. It also has to work out how patients can be discharged more quickly.

    After just five months of the current financial year, the trust has exceeded the limit it set for the year.

    The trust's finance director Neil Nisbet says they're still working towards delivering a deficit of £5.9m but for that to happen they'll have to make further savings - and that comes at a time when both hospitals will need to take extra steps to cope with the winter months.

  13. Cardboard recycling to return to Shrewsbury next weekpublished at 17:51 British Summer Time 28 September 2016

    Five years after binmen stopped collecting cardboard in the Shropshire Council area, the collections are returning, external - starting in Shrewsbury next week.

    These blue bags are being delivered to homes in the town and people in the old north and south Shropshire district council areas will get their bags in November and December.

    People living in the old Oswestry and Bridgnorth council areas will have to wait until the new year.

    Shropshire Council has agreed to welcome a further five Syrian refugee families and 42 unaccompanied children from other countries.

    It's likely to mean a total of nearly 70 extra refugees, and the council says the government will provide funding.

    The man leading the Future Fit review of Shropshire's hospital services, David Evans, has again emphasised, external that no decision has been made on the future of A&E services in the county.

    He said the "vast majority of health professionals working in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin" agree that there needs to be changes to the way accident and emergency and critical care is delivered in the county.

    And Mr Evans explained that the recent review which favoured emergency services moving to Shrewsbury was considering non-financial factors like access, quality of care and the ease of attracting the right staff.

    He also repeated that a final decision on a preferred option could be months away yet.

  18. Watch: Police catch HGV driver on mobilepublished at 16:58 British Summer Time 28 September 2016

    The driver of a 44-tonne truck was among motorists caught using their mobile phone as the BBC joined Central Motorway Police on patrol. 

    It comes as data shows the number of motorists stopped across the country has almost halved in five years.

    The National Police Federation said the drop was due to fewer traffic officers.

    Under new rules expected to come in next year, drivers will get six points on their licence and face a £200 fine.

    Former Shrewsbury Town assistant manager Graham Hawkins has died, he was 70.

    Hawkins was number two to Graham Turner at the end of the 1970s before becoming manager at Wolves. 

    He got Wolves promoted in his first season in charge before losing his job in the top flight. He had been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
