    Hadley Road in Telford has been closed for emergency repairs, external after heavy flooding near Sommerfeld Road caused damage to the carriageway, Telford and Wrekin Council said.

    The road is expected to remain shut for until tomorrow at the earliest.

  2. Man pleads guilty to arsonpublished at 15:16 Greenwich Mean Time 21 November 2016

    A man has pleaded guilty to arson following an incident over the summer. 

    Martin Haddigan, who's 27, appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court earlier today. 

    He pleaded guilty to arson with intent to damage property at a farm in Craven Arms, where three caravans and a shed were destroyed.

    He'll be sentenced in January. Another charge of arson with intent to endanger life was dropped.

  5. Measures to control HGVs in Wem suggestedpublished at 14:40 Greenwich Mean Time 21 November 2016

    A weight limit for heavy vehicles, or signs directing them in another direction, could be introduced to Wem town centre, according to a Shropshire Council report.

    It follows complaints that lorries and other large vehicles are damaging the pavement and other property.

    The council report concluded that HGV traffic was especially a concern on Mill Street, but said that allowance had to be made for vehicles that needed to drive into the town for business reasons.

    While we were in Wem, we saw a number of heavy vehicles pass through the town, some of them clipping the kerb.

    A spokesman for the Unite union said it was the third year in a row that redundancies had been announced at Aga in the run up to Christmas, and his members were looking forward to the festive season "with trepidation".  

    Almost 70 job cuts were made at Aga, both in Telford and its Leamington headquarters in December 2015, many among admin staff.

    At the time, a spokesperson for Middleby Corp said they were being made to "allow the company to reduce cost and complexity and enable greater investment in future".

  7. AGA looks to cut jobs in Telfordpublished at 14:15 Greenwich Mean Time 21 November 2016

    Up to 63 jobs could go at Aga Rangemaster in Telford, the company has announced.

    It is the second round of job cuts since it was taken over by USA firm Middleby Corp last year. 

    Middleby Corp said the latest cuts represented "a number of organisational changes linked to current market conditions".

    The company says it is hoping to minimise the number of compulsory job losses.

    The owners of a caravan park near Wenlock Edge could be told to improve access to the site and plant more trees to hide it from the surrounding hills. 

    Milward Rise Caravan Park in Kenley is seeking retrospective planning permission, having increased in size over recent years.

    A report to Shropshire councillors says that's acceptable as long as the new restrictions are in place.

    Waitrose recieved planning permission for a store next to the garden centre on Otley Road in Shrewsbury in 2012, but construction has been hit by a series of delays and while the supermarket says it is still committed to the site, it has no planned opening date.

    Nevertheless, its agents have written to Shropshire Council to object to plans for a Lidl store, external a short distance away, next to the Shrewsbury Town stadium.

    The agents say the Lidl application makes a number of incorrect assumptions about the effects on local trade and raises concerns about "the potential impact on the approved Waitrose", noting that the proposed Lidl with the recently built M&S "will adversely affect the viability of Waitrose".

  12. Go Carz MD opposes licensing changespublished at 13:02 Greenwich Mean Time 21 November 2016

    The managing director of Go Carz, says there is nothing wrong with drivers from outside Shropshire operating in the county, and suggested concerns raised by some drivers is "scaremongering".

    Go Carz operates in a number of local authority areas across the West Midlands and is opposed to a review of licensing regulations, which is being supported by both Shropshire Council and Telford and Wrekin Council.

    The councils say they are responding to concerns by local drivers, but Carl Wilday said restrictions could reduce the number of vehicles available late at night and that could become a "safety concern" for passengers.

    And he said Shropshire's councils should try to create "better working relationships with the neighbouring councils" if they have concerns about the standards of vehicles from outside the county.

  13. Police investigate attempted armed robberypublished at 12:45 Greenwich Mean Time 21 November 2016

    A Shrewsbury shopkeeper has faced down a man who threatened him with what is believed to be a hand gun.

    The police say the incident happened shortly after 20:00 yesterday at Monkmoor Store. The man had demanded money, but fled when the shopkeeper started to approach him.

    The wet weather has been good news for salmon trying to jump the weir in Ludlow.

    They've been struggling to clear it, because of low water levels and the Environment Agency had to build a "fish pass".

    But the organisation says that because water levels have risen, even large, 20lb, fish are able to leap over now and continue their journey upstream.

    The old Beeches Hospital in Ironbridge is to be converted into homes. 

    Telford and Wrekin Council has given permission for 36 houses within the old workhouse buildings and more than 50 others on the land around it.

    The Tigers beat Basingstoke 3-1 last night, and demolished Hull 7-3 on Saturday.

  20. Councils call for mini-cab reviewpublished at 10:52 Greenwich Mean Time 21 November 2016

    There's a call for a review of mini-cab licensing from Shropshire's two main local authorities.

    Both Shropshire Council and Telford and Wrekin Council say concerns have been raised about drivers coming to work here, who are registered outside the county.

    The two councils accept that this is perfectly legal, but say they are concerned because the drivers aren't working under the same conditions as drivers registered here.

    The Local Government Association is also calling for legislative change to help local companies.
