Shropshire Community Health Trust's decision to vote to merge with a larger NHS health body, isn't the first in its history.

It was itself the product of a merger between sections of the county's two primary care trusts in 2011.

Its main purpose is to support people's long-term health and social needs, by providing services at or near their homes.

According to a report drawn up for the council in May, despite the stories about gangs of Asian men, the overwhelming majority of the perpetrators (90%) were white.

Speaking at the time, the NSPCC charity described the rise in reports in Telford as "shocking", but said it indicated victims were more confident about coming forward.

Claims by the national media that Telford is the "child sex capital of the UK" are expected to be strongly denied at a council meeting tonight.

Government figures revealed more reports of children being abused in Telford than anywhere in the country, but police and councillors will challenge that claim - saying it's not children being groomed for sex.
