  5. NHS warns of 'incredibly high' demand on A&Epublished at 17:50 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2017

    The NHS has issued another request for people with non-critical illnesses or injuries to stay away from the county's A&E units, and use "more appropriate alternatives".

    The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust said 950 people were seen at Shropshire's two A&E units over three days, earlier this week, a level of demand described as "incredibly high".

  7. Hospitals say they warned of threat to A&E departmentspublished at 17:21 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2017

    The chief executive of the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust says he warned about the pressure on the county's two A&E departments last year.

    Simon Wright said that when the Future Fit review of hospital services began in 2014, they had seven A&E consultants and following the most recent resignation, they would be down to four.

    Mr Wright also said pressure on accident and emergency had increased, with some patients facing 12-hour waits and that the two departments were being kept open on the "goodwill of staff".

  11. Consultant shortage could mean A&E closurespublished at 16:00 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2017

    Shropshire's hospitals say they won't be able to staff the county's A&E units 24 hours a day from June, because another consultant has resigned.

    The latest departure, which has been blamed on delays to the Future Fit review of hospital services, will leave only four consultants employed across Telford and Shrewsbury.

    A board meeting today has heard that unless a replacement can be found, action will have to be taken before the summer to maintain safe services. 

    That's likely to include one of the units shutting at times.

    Shropshire Council wants to know why the county gets less money from the NHS, compared to the national average. 

    Its health portfolio-holder, Karen Calder, has written to the junior health minister and Ludlow MP, Philip Dunne, asking for an explanation.

    The national average is around £2,000 per person a year, But Shropshire, including Telford and Wrekin, gets around £200 less.

  14. Fresh appeal after schoolboy injured in accidentpublished at 15:05 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2017

    Police have renewed their appeal for witnesses after a schoolboy suffered serous head injuries in a collision between his bicycle and a car in north Shropshire on Monday morning. 

    A white Volkswagen was involved in the collision, which happened outside Princes Electrical on Church Street in Prees.

    Police say they are particularly keen to trace the driver of a white Astra van with black roof bars.

  15. Power cut hits homes in Church Strettonpublished at 14:40 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2017

    Western Power Distribution say 1,567 homes are affected. 

    It says initial reports suggest overhead power lines may be down, and the circuit has been "isolated" for safety reasons.

  18. Three out of four not getting free flu jabpublished at 12:17 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2017

    The NHS is encouraging more people to take up the offer of a free flu jab, saying fewer than one in four of those entitled to one in Shropshire and Staffordshire has taken up the offer.

    Everyone over the age of 65 is entitled to a free flu vaccination from a doctors surgery or a participating local pharmacy.

    People with long-term health problems, pregnant women and carers are also entitled to the free jab.
