    A petition calling for Donald Trump's state visit to the UK to be cancelled has now been signed by more than 1.6m people, including over 9,153 in Shropshire.

    It is due to be debated by MPs on 20 February.

    Telford Tigers travel to Hull Pirates tomorrow, looking to extend their nine point lead at the top of the EPL table.

    Their opponents beat them 6-0 earlier in the season and head coach Tom Watkins has promised his team will be fully prepared for the game.

    Watkins has also praised the contribution of netminders Sam Gospel and Jon Baston, who have shared keeping duties since Baston's arrival, conceding only eight goals between them over the past four games.

  6. North Shropshire MP urges doubters to back Brexit billpublished at 16:49 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2017

    The North Shropshire MP, Owen Paterson, has spoken in a parliamentary debate on Brexit, urging his fellow MPs to vote in favour of triggering Article 50.

    Scottish Nationalists and the Liberal Democrats will oppose the measure, along with some Labour MPs, but Mr Paterson said it could cause "catastrophic damage" to the reputation of parliament, the media and the judiciary, if Britain doesn't honour the result of the EU referendum.

  7. Over 180 imitation firearms and stun guns recovered by policepublished at 16:33 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2017

    West Mercia police say 165 imitation firearms and 16 stun guns have either been seized or handed in over the last three years.

    The force has also revealed, external it made 26 arrests for offences involving imitation guns and 24 arrests for those involving stun guns, between January 2014 and December 2016.

    Over the same period, 3,786 firearms were either handed in to the police in West Mercia or seized by officers, with roughly three quarters of them recovered in Herefordshire and Worcestershire, the rest in Shropshire.

  12. Wildlife volunteers to chat to lonely people in Shropshirepublished at 14:50 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2017

    Wildlife Trust volunteers will be visiting the homes of lonely people in Shropshire, to put up bird feeders and have a chat about wildlife while they are there.

    It's an initiative being run jointly with the Shropshire Clinical Commissioning Group, which says there are a growing number of people who are "socially isolated, or at risk of becoming so".

    The project is being supported by the Big Lottery Fund and the volunteers will be getting training before visiting people's homes.

    There's a warning of high winds across Shropshire, Staffordshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire on Friday.

    The Met Office says, external there could be gusts of 60 to 70 mph in places.

    It warns of possible damage to trees, power lines and buildings and delays on the roads.

    The midfielder has been absent for the past month for personal reasons, and his contract has been cancelled by mutual consent.

    The show is preparing to help adapt the home of 11-year-old Matthew Cooper, from Trench, who has been fighting cancer.

  17. Ludlow supermarket plans could be approvedpublished at 12:51 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2017

    A new supermarket at Rocks Green on the edge of Ludlow could get the go-ahead after the applicants reduced the size of the planned store.

    Shropshire councillors had previously deferred a decision on the scheme, saying that they were "minded to refuse".

    A report due to go before them next week advises them to approve the new application.

    A three-legged white fox which escaped from a wildlife centre near Telford on Saturday has been located in nearby woods and farmland.

    Thor was believed to have jumped about 8ft (2.5m) on to a branch which had fallen on to his enclosure fence at Hoo Farm Animal Kingdom.

    Centre co-owner Edward Dorrell said he was “very relived”, particularly as there had been few sightings of the four-year-old fox since his escape on Saturday evening.

    Staff have been able to hand-feed the Arctic-Siberian fox cross but have not yet caught him.
