    A national charity is recruiting volunteers to work with the Shropshire Coroner's Court. 

    Coroners Court Service or CCS train volunteers to provide emotional and practical support for family members and witnesses attending an inquest. 

    The service says it's looking to expand its operation in Shropshire and will soon be recruiting volunteers locally.

    The Shrewsbury Town manager Paul Hurst says he'd support drug testing of every Football League player.

    Figures obtained by the BBC found that over half the players in League One did not face tests last season.

    Hurst says the punishments for failing tests should act as sufficient deterrent but testing is not regular.

    Grants worth £600,000 are to be set aside for projects aiming to keep young people safe and away from crime in the West Mercia area. 

    The funding from the Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion will be available for charities and organisations running schemes.

    Some of the funds will also be earmarked to help improve road safety awareness among young drivers.

  8. Campaigners try to save pool from closurepublished at 17:38 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2017

    Campaigners who are trying to save a Shropshire swimming pool from closure, external will put their case for saving the centre to councillors later this week.

    One of the members of Stretton Pool Action Group, external is due to address a full council meeting after presenting a thousand signature petition.

    The council earmarked the centre in Church Stretton for closure due to it being "small, costly to operate, requiring significant investment, and serving very small communities".

    Though the council has not stated how much it would save by closing the site, an official document says: "In Shrewsbury, there is potential to consider siting the town’s sport and leisure offer on one major site; this would increase participation opportunities, reduce operational costs and provide real savings moving forward."

    Badminton, which was set a target by UK Sport of winning a medal in Rio, is the only sport that earned a podium place in the summer to have its funding removed.

    Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge took bronze in the men's doubles after the sport was given £5.74m in the last cycle.

    Jess Pugh, from Telford, is yet to say anything about the decision on her funding, but previously said her ambition of winning a medal in the 2020 Olympics would be made much much harder without any financial backing.

    The bells, in a remote part of Myndtown Church, are believed to be third oldest in country.

    A "crutch amnesty" has been started by two hospitals in Shropshire in a bid to recover thousands of pounds worth of equipment.

    The trust which runs Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford say they are desperate for former patients to return unwanted crutches and walking frames which are no longer needed.

    The trust which runs the two hospital says it issues around 100 crutches every month, with only a small number being returned, costing in excess of £10,000 each year.

    The former warden's home next to the Mere, in Ellesmere, has been given a new lease of life as a venue for functions and meetings.

    It's been refurbished by Shropshire Council as a venue for functions. 

    The property is in Cremorne Gardens and had been standing empty for years. 

    Council workers who look after countryside sites in north Shropshire will also be based in the building, but the authority hopes it'll be a useful asset for local groups.

    Badminton is one of seven sports to have lost appeals against UK Sport funding cuts for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic cycle.

    Team GB's Archery team, which is based in Lilleshall, Shropshire, is among the sports to have its appeals rejected, as well as goalball, fencing, table tennis, weightlifting and wheelchair rugby.

  19. 12th Century bells removed for conservationpublished at 13:52 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2017

    Two ancient bells from a 12th Century church in Shropshire will be removed later today, for important conservation work.

    The bells will be seen for the first time in centuries as they're lifted down from the 800-year-old Myndtown Church, near Bishops Castle.

    In 2015, the Grade II listed church was considered to be in "poor condition" by Historic England and was awarded more than £220,000 by the Heritage Lottery Fund for extensive works to be carried out.
