A virtual reality app aimed at promoting road safety is being rolled out across the West Mercia force area.

The DriveVR app allows people to be in a virtual driver's seat, and looks at driving challenges including speeding, mobile phones, drink driving, drug driving and passenger distractions.

It is being delivered to around 5,000 young people each year as part of the Green Light Programme.

Too many people are killed or seriously injured on our roads, in collisions which could have been prevented. Education is vitally important to ensure everyone understands the impact of making a decision which puts road users at risk."

There are people who are driving at speed and still texting or listening to calls, and then there are other people who are going into slow moving traffic, coming up to traffic lights, vehicles are more or less stationary, and they pick the phone up. Both can cause accidents."

  7. AFC Telford United shares going back on salepublished at 11:56 British Summer Time 31 March 2017

AFC Telford United will be putting shares in the club up for sale again later today.

A third were bought by fans when they went on sale last year, but the club believes big investors were put off by a rule which limited any one shareholder to 20% of the shares.

That limit on share-ownership has now been removed and the club is hoping the share issue will raise £500,000.

  8. A&E proposals in summarypublished at 11:31 British Summer Time 31 March 2017

A lot has been said about the possibility of Telford's A&E department closing overnight, so here's a recap of where we are:

    • The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust board has decided that staffing levels in accident and emergency are so low, they may soon reach a point at which they are unsafe.
    • It has decided that the best way to reduce the workload is to close Telford's A&E overnight and has agreed to draw up contingency plans to do this.
    • Those plans will be enacted if the staff shortages worsen, but will have to go back to the board for ratification.
    • The chief executive of the NHS trust, Simon Wright, said intensive care unit would remain in Telford, to serve the women and children's unit there.
    • Closing Shrewsbury overnight was dismissed, because emergency surgery and the trauma unit are based there and it would take too long to move them to Telford.

A two-day sci-fi convention is being held at the Telford International Centre this weekend, with stars from Star Trek, Stargate and Babylon 5 turning up to meet their fans.

The Out of the Ashes event has been organised by two friends, David Limberg (left) and Will Ross (right) who met at a convention and thought they'd like to organise one themselves.

  10. Telford council to hold vote of no confidence in hospital leaders published at 10:51 British Summer Time 31 March 2017

Telford and Wrekin councillors are unhappy with the possibility of Telford's accident and emergency unit closing overnight and are planning to hold a vote of no confidence in the people running the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust.

The leader of the Conservative group on the council, Councillor Andrew Eade (below, right), accused them of "dithering" and said the closure of the A&E would be "wholly unacceptable".

The leader of the ruling Labour group, Councillor Shaun Davies (above, left), said the hospital managers had lost the confidence of the local community and tweeted "change must now happen".

  11. A&E proposals partly brought on by hospital review delaypublished at 10:31 British Summer Time 31 March 2017

The delays to the long-running review of hospital services in Shropshire have contributed to the decision to consider closing Telford's A&E overnight, according to the chief executive of the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust.

Simon Wright said one consultant had left and another was on the verge of leaving because the hospitals hadn't been able to move forward with plans to move emergency care and women and children's services out of Telford and make it a centre for planned surgery instead.

He also said that if Telford's A&E department does have to close down at night time, an intensive care unit would remain there, to treat children at the women and children's unit.

  12. Football: Hurst praises 'standout' Sadlerpublished at 09:50 British Summer Time 31 March 2017

    Nick Southall
    Journalist, BBC Shropshire

The Shrewsbury Town manager Paul Hurst has praised the reliability of defender Matt Sadler as he prepares his team for a crucial match away at Bristol Rovers.

Sadler struggled to get into the team under the previous manager Micky Mellon but has been a regular since Hurst took over in late October.

The Town are just a point clear of the League One relegation zone with a month of the season to go.

He probably is the standout person since I've come in. Not always the best player, certainly not the worst though. He can pretty much guarantee a level, or as close as you can get to a guarantee when you're dealing with human beings of what you're going to get from him."

  14. Assisted dying fight may continuepublished at 09:02 British Summer Time 31 March 2017

    Alex Seftel
    Journalist, BBC Shropshire

Supporters of a terminally ill Shropshire man say there are "strong grounds" for appealing against a court decision preventing him from seeking help to die.

Noel Conway, 67, from Shrewsbury suffers from motor neurone disease and says he was "very disappointed" to lose a legal challenge in the High Court yesterday.

His supporters claim most Britons are in favour of a change in the law.

  15. Government intervention won't help says hospital trust bosspublished at 08:40 British Summer Time 31 March 2017

    Elaine Muir
    Journalist, BBC Shropshire

The chief executive of Shropshire's two main hospitals says having the health secretary intervene in ongoing issues with accident and emergency services won't help.

He was responding to repeated calls from the Labour leader of Telford and Wrekin Council to get Jeremy Hunt to step in.

Yesterday, the hospital trust board agreed to come up with a contingency plan, which could involve the overnight closure of A&E at the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford if staffing levels drop any more.

Simon Wright says the problem should be fixed locally.

I think this would be better served by us getting round the table and talking positively about what we can do, rather than asking people from outside to come in and point to things that we already know."
