    A lifetime's collection of work by a Shropshire-based artist is being exhibited and sold following her death last year.

    Judith Moy, from Bayston Hill, near Shrewsbury, had asked for it to be sold in aid of  Severn Hospice, external .

    It's taking place on Saturday afternoon at Shrewsbury School.

    Shropshire's cricketers, external are stepping up their preparations for the new season. 

    They'll play a 50-overs practice match against the Worcestershire second team at Wrekin College on Sunday.

    The season itself starts on 23 April with a Knock-Out Trophy game against Staffordshire at London Road.

  3. Telford A&E overnight closure plan 'downgrade by backdoor' published at 14:53 British Summer Time 29 March 2017

    A suggestion to close Telford's accident and emergency service overnight has been called "the effective downgrading of the hospital via the backdoor" by the council.

    The plans, which will be presented to the hospital trust board later, include closing the A&E at the Princess Royal Hospital, external (PRH) from 20:00 until 08:00, with emergency cases being taken to Shrewsbury instead.

    Walk-in cases would still be dealt with by an Urgent Care Centre in Telford, which could take non-emergency cases.

    The A&E unit, while operating alongside with Women and Children’s Centre and stroke services by day, would be apart at night, Telford & Wrekin Council, external said.

    Council leader Shaun Davies said: "We will fight this tooth and nail – allowing to go ahead it will effectively start the downgrading of our hospital by the backdoor.

    "How can it make sense? The PRH is at the heart of the area’s biggest population which also has the greatest health needs."

    In ice hockey, Telford Tigers, external visit Guildford tonight looking for revenge, after the Surrey-based side beat them 3-0 in their opening play-off match.

    Since then, Telford have beaten Peterborough and Sheffield and are back in contention for a top-two finish in their group.

    The Tigers are at Peterborough on Saturday and host Sheffield on Sunday.

    William Brookes School, external in Much Wenlock has promised to work with education authorities to solve safeguarding issues which have seen it placed in special measures. 

    An Ofsted inspection in February praised teaching at the school and the results achieved by pupils. 

    But it found a catalogue of administrative failures including a lack of references for new staff, poor record keeping and a lack of knowledge among staff of how to raise concerns about pupils' welfare. 

    The school says it has an action plan and that safeguarding is "the absolute priority" for it.

    The Friends of Lord Hill's Column say they are "extremely grateful" to the descendants of the builder who completed it, as a painting of him is returning to Shropshire after 200 years.

    In 1815, John Straphen took over construction of the column and built its stone staircase free of charge.

    His descendants in Australia are bringing a portrait to Shropshire next week to donate it to Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery, external

    Friends chairman Richard Hayes said it seemed a relative had died and the painting was found hanging in a house in a remote part of the state of Victoria.

    A Shropshire charity which collects and distributes food and clothing to refugees and homeless people is looking for a new base. 

    Shropshire Loves was given notice to leave its unit on Telford's Stafford Park industrial estate because someone wants to rent it. 

    The charity also repairs bikes and sends them to war-torn Syria and wants somewhere bigger than the 5,000 square metres it currently occupies.

    It comes a week on from the terrorist attack in Westminster, which left five people dead and and around 50 injured.

    In a statement, Mr Campion thanks West Mercia officers for their dedication and reassures the public that "all that is needed" is being done to prevent threats to local communities.

    A 33-year-old man has been charged with three armed robberies and possession of an imitation firearm.

    Mark Stephen Gillon, of no fixed address, has been charged after incidents at the Lloyds Bank on Madeley High Street nine days ago and at Barclays bank on the Square in Shifnal and the One Stop shop on Shrewsbury Road in Market Drayton on Friday.

    Mr Gillon was also charged with stealing a car and will appear before Telford magistrates today. A 34-year-old woman from Telford has also been released on police bail.

  15. Big increase in reported animal cruelty cases in Shropshirepublished at 09:21 British Summer Time 29 March 2017

    The number of animal cruelty cases recorded by the RSPCA in Shropshire rose by almost 10% last year - the third highest increase in the country.

    In all, 1,439 cases of animal cruelty were reported to the charity in the county.
