A new surgical technique trialled at Oswestry's orthopaedic hospital should be offered to patients nationwide, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) says.

Surgery to fuse two vertebrae together is offered to reduce serious back pain and the new procedure involves operating through a person's side, rather than the stomach or back, to reduce the recovery period.

Going in through the front or back means navigating past a number of organs and muscles and doctors at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital say this causes more trauma.

It has appointed two new spinal surgeons in the past few months, bringing the total to eight.

    Quote Message

As more surgeons learn the techniques, see the benefit and develop the skills, I think it will become offered more widely.

The trusat cares for 10 museums and 36 scheduled monuments and listed buildings and regular running costs are paid for by admission fees and retail sales.

But all major projects like this have to be paid for by fundraising appeals or grants.

    Quote Message

It's a very competitive world today, fundraising. Traditional sources that we used to look to are no longer available, so we really have to be creative with how we are going to raise it

It's the second department at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust (SATH) to have to transfer patients elsewhere because of consultant shortages.

SATH have only had two consultants supported by a locum. The national average is one neurologist per 80,000 people, so that should be six neurologists for the Shropshire population
