    A survey of fish stocks in the River Severn, external has found 16 different species living in the stretch between Shrewsbury and Gloucester.

    The Environment Agency, which carried out the survey, said 2016 was the "year of the dace" - the most widespread species found.

    Officers found fewer fish than previously but there are now 16 species on our stretch of river, including barbel and bleak, gudgeon and goby.

    Minnow were the most numerous fish, and it was the first year common bream had been caught, the agency said.

  3. Australian portrait-donor 'gobsmacked' by receptionpublished at 17:53 British Summer Time 4 April 2017

    An Australian man who travelled to the UK to donate a portrait to the Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery says he is "gobsmacked" by the reception he has received.

    Warwick Horsfall is a descendant of John Straphen, the man who completed the construction of Lord Hill's column in Shrewsbury in the early 1800s and is featured in the painting.

    The portrait had been in his family's possession for years.

    He said it had "far more significance to the people of Shropshire".

  5. Football: Shrewsbury opponents Millwall struggling away from home published at 17:39 British Summer Time 4 April 2017

    Looking at the league table you'd be worried that Millwall might inflict another damaging league defeat on Shrewsbury Town tonight, but this match is being played in Shrewsbury and Millwall have not been a good side away from the New Den.

    Since the start of the year they have won eight games and drawn three at home, but they have won only once away - and that was against League One's bottom-side, Coventry City.

    The visitors have also struggled against teams in the relegation scrap, losing to Swindon Town and drawing against both Oldham and Chesterfield.

  6. Council says defence hub will bring hundreds of jobs to Telford published at 17:26 British Summer Time 4 April 2017

    The new £83m defence logistics centre in Telford will bring hundreds of jobs to the borough, according to Telford and Wrekin Council.

    The local authority says it will also safeguard the future of hundreds of defence workers who already live and work in the Donnington area.

    Eight years in captivity and he's now adjusting to being a free man.

    Janusz, not his real name, was trafficked from Poland to the West Midlands picking vegetables from fields, as well as working at a a recycling plant for 12 hours a day, six days a week. 

    Figures show the number of potential victims of slavery and people trafficking in the UK has risen to 3,805 in 2016 - a 118% increase in three years.

    Many that are rescued are taken to safe houses run by the Salvation Army.

    Janusz was freed after a police investigation and now lives in one of these safe houses.

    Anne Read from the organisation says: "They are often trapped, not by keys or padlocks but by threats which we are seeing continually."

  8. Police looking for witnesses a week after sexual assaultpublished at 17:08 British Summer Time 4 April 2017

    Police officers will be standing in a small wooded area on the outskirts of Market Drayton tonight, hoping to jog the public's memories about an evening in which a sexual assault took place.

    West Mercia Police says the attack happened near the roundabout at the junction of Shrewsbury Road and the A53, by Longford Turning between 21:15 and 21:45 last Tuesday.

    They want to speak to anyone who may have seen someone entering or leaving the wooded area, or walking at the nearby Muller factory.

  9. Football: Deegan aims to keep Shrewsbury spirits highpublished at 16:45 British Summer Time 4 April 2017

    The next three games for Shrewsbury Town are all at home and the manager Paul Hurst says he is relying on the "big characters" in his squad like Gary Deegan to steer them clear of relegation.

  10. Portrait of column-builder handed over to museumpublished at 16:26 British Summer Time 4 April 2017

    A portrait of the man who built Lord Hill's Column in Shrewsbury has spent nearly 200 years hanging on the wall of a house in rural Australia - today it has been handed over to the Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery.

    John Straphen took over construction of the column in 1815 and the painting shows him holding a diagram of it.

    The painting turned up in the small town of Echuca, Australia, in the possession of Straphen's descendants and Warwick Horsfall was there to represent the family and hand it over today.

  11. American firm explains why it chose to back Telfordpublished at 16:07 British Summer Time 4 April 2017

    The American company chosen to oversee work at Donnington's new defence logistics centre says it was attracted to Telford by the local infrastructure, the support of the local council and the workforce already based in the area.

    Leidos led the bid to build the £83m warehouses in Shropshire and was awarded the contract by the Ministry of Defence two years ago.

    The day-to-day operation will be managed by Kuehne + Nagel and a number of staff employed by the MoD in Telford are transferring to work at the new centre.

    A date has been fixed for the funeral of the former Shropshire County Council chairman, Major Adrian Coles. 

    It'll take place next Wednesday at St Paul's Church in the village of Knowbury, near Clee Hill.

    A man in his 30s remains in a "serious, but stable" condition in hospital after an attack in Trench at the weekend.

    Police say he was assaulted outside the Dun Cow Inn on Trench Road at about 18:00 on Sunday.

    A 27-year-old man from Telford has been arrested on suspicion of Grievous Bodily Harm and released while investigations continue.

  16. Defence storage centre uses latest technologypublished at 14:26 British Summer Time 4 April 2017

    The Ministry of Defence says its new storage centre at Donnington in Telford will save it £500m by 2028 and will use the latest technology to distribute defence equipment.

    The £83m warehouses are equipped with machinery which can be used to pick more than 1,000 items per hour from the racks of shelves.

    The Shrewsbury manager Paul Hurst says he wants players who "want to meet the challenge head-on" and says he plans to ditch those who are "a little bit shy", regardless of whether they stay up this season.

    They face a tough final six games, with four of those matches being played against teams in the top 10 of League One.

    The leader of Telford and Wrekin Council has been reported to the local government Standards Board by the MP for Shrewsbury.

    Daniel Kawcynski has accused Cllr Shaun Davies of posting "highly personal" tweets aimed at the chief executive of Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust amid a row over A&E services.

    Cllr Davies has responded by saying he was speaking on behalf of the council, which is due to hold a vote of no confidence in the management of the hospitals and that it wasn't "about personalities".

    He also said he and other councillors "wouldn't be silenced".

    But Mr Kawcynski is unimpressed.

  20. Football: Shrewsbury could be two wins from safetypublished at 13:09 British Summer Time 4 April 2017

    Although Shrewsbury Town are facing some tough matches between now and the end of the season, they might just have to win two of the last six to stay up.

    They have 43 points at the moment and in all but three of the last 10 seasons, 49 points or more have been enough to beat the drop.

    Notts County were relegated with 50 points in 2014-15 and Gillingham went down on goal difference in the 2009-10 season.

    Shrewsbury also have a game in hand on most of the teams at the bottom of the League One table.
