    They'll be no poultry at next month's Shropshire County Show in Shrewsbury.

    It's because of the current government ban on moving chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese due to bird flu.

    The show organisers say they hope the poultry section of the show can return next year.

  2. Multi-academy trust could start in Septemberpublished at 13:55 British Summer Time 5 April 2017

    More than 25 schools have expressed an interest in the idea of a new trust to oversee their management.

    Shropshire Council says it would cost around £200,000 to set up this Shropshire Education Trust, with the money coming from grants given by the Department for Education to the schools.

    There are still 126 schools in the county that could opt out of Shropshire Council control and become academies to join this trust.

    And if the proposals are agreed by June, the trust could start operating as soon as September.

  4. Telford dancers on ITV show tonightpublished at 13:20 British Summer Time 5 April 2017

    A children's dance troupe from Telford will be on the ITV show Little Big Shots, with Dawn French tonight. 

    Entourage is a team of under-14-year-olds, formed less than two years ago and they have won world and European titles in competitions run by the United Dance Organisation.

    The show celebrates talented children, rather than a being a talent show, and they will be on the television at 20:00.

    After that, they return to Germany in May to defend their title at UDO European championships.

  5. Nearly a third of parking fine appeals successfulpublished at 13:00 British Summer Time 5 April 2017

    Nearly a third of drivers who appealed against their parking fines in the Shropshire Council area were successful last year - three times more than in the neighbouring Staffordshire County Council area.

    The figures have come the Press Association and show there were 1,828 fines issued by the local authority between January and October, with 545 successfully challenged - that's slightly below the national average.

  6. Inquest hears baby could have survived infectionpublished at 12:43 British Summer Time 5 April 2017

    An inquest in Shrewsbury has heard how a newborn baby from north Shropshire, who died from an infection caught at birth, could have survived with earlier intervention. 

    Pippa Griffiths was born at home in Myddle nearly a year ago, but died from a Group B Streptococcus infection. 

    The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust accepts that if had been spotted earlier it is probable the baby would have survived. 

    Pippa's parents have called for routine testing for the bacteria to be made available on the NHS.

    Firefighters say no-one was hurt in a tractor fire at Ternhill yesterday afternoon, but as you can see from this photo they took, the vehicle has been seriously damaged.

    It took them half an hour to put the fire out.

    Over the past 10 seasons only two teams have been relegated from League One on 50 points or more and if that is the target again this season, there are still five teams above Shrewsbury Town with work to do.

    And if we assume that Chesterfield and Coventry are already down, that means there are still seven teams, including Shrewsbury and Swindon, involved in the relegation battle.

    Work to restore a Shropshire canal bridge will start next summer after receiving a grant of £70,000.

    The Inland Waterways Association was left the money in a legacy left by a local canal restoration expert.

    The grant will help fund the rebuilding of the Schoolhouse Bridge near Crickheath, one of the last major projects on the stretch of the canal between Shropshire and Llanymynech.

    Their 0-0 draw at second-placed Wolverhampton Sporting means they remain 17 points clear with five games to go and they can't be caught.

    A cyclist has suffered serious injuries following a collision with a car on the A49 near Ludlow. 

    Ithappened on the stretch between Wooferton and Ashford Bowdler at around 19:00 last night.

    Dozens of schools across Shropshire could join together to be run as a single body.

    Councillors will discuss next week helping them to form a massive "multi-academy trust", as more and more schools become academies.

    Once established, the trust would have its own management away from the council, but could still buy services such as HR and training from it.  

    Multi-academy trusts of varying sizes already exist in the county. Four schools in Telford are already part of one based in Staffordshire.

    Councillors in Telford will discuss plans for a new quarry and landfill site near Newport today.

    Officers have recommended that permission be refused, but no decision on the proposal for the site at Pave Lane will be made today. 

    Instead, government inspectors will have the final say later in the year.

    An inquest is today expected to hear details of a one-day-old baby from Shropshire, who died from an infection she caught at birth.

    Her parents Kayleigh and Colin Griffiths have called for routine testing for the bacteria to be made available on the NHS. It's the biggest cause of meningitis in newborns and one in five women carry the bacteria.   

    But the UK National Screening Committee has recommended against a national screening programme, external - it says there is no way to predict which babies will be affected by the disease and which will be born without complications.
