  1. Ice Hockey: Thousands of fans expected to watch Telford Tigers at the weekend published at 09:28 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    More than 3,000 fans are expected at the Skydome Arena in Coventry on Saturday, as Telford Tigers face Basingstoke Bison in the second semi-final.  

    The winners will then play either Guildford or Milton Keynes in the final on Sunday.

    Nineteen-year-old Tigers defenceman Corey Goodison says he expects the know-how of the squad's senior members to play a key role.

    It's a prickly subject but the number of hedgehogs in the West Midlands is down by 70% on last year. 

    Numbers have been in decline for decades but there was some hope last year with an unexpected boom.

    Stuart Edmunds, from Shropshire Wildlife Trust, says: "Last year was looking like a really good year for hedgehogs - the numbers were quite high but this year for some reason they have plummeted, with about 70% less recorded than last year."

    Six Shropshire tourist attractions are launching a campaign to get rid of moths

    English Heritage is worried about the bugs eating away at collections of furniture, including carpets and tapestries. 

    The organisation owns sites such as Wroxeter Roman ruins, Stokesay Castle and Wenlock Abbey in the county.

    Nationally, English Heritage has been monitoring the the spread of clothes moths since 1997 and is now checking for the creatures at 40 sites, with the aim of preventing damage to around 500,000 artefacts.

  8. 'Reluctant' decision to cancel show's poultrypublished at 17:55 British Summer Time 5 April 2017

    The director of the Shropshire County Show says they had no choice but to cancel the poultry element of this year's event.

    Ian Bebbington said that the recently extended government ban on the movement of birds, to stop the spread of avian flu had made it too difficult to organise, with parts of Shropshire deemed "high risk" areas.

    Mr Bebbington said the decision had been taken "really reluctantly" because he knew it was "such a popular part of the show".

  9. Hospital trust says lessons learnt following baby deathpublished at 17:40 British Summer Time 5 April 2017

    The family of a newborn Shropshire baby have had an apology from the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust (SaTH), and a promise that lessons have been learnt from her death.

    Pippa Griffiths was born at home in Myddle nearly a year ago, but died from a Group B Streptococcus infection. A coroner ruled today that her death could have been prevented if signs of the infection had been spotted earlier.

    The Women and Children’s Care Group Director at SaTH, Jo Banks, said after the inquest that a review had been carried out, involving a "great deal of fact finding".

    Telford Tigers are expecting to see their biggest crowds of the season this weekend, at the finals of the English Premier League play-offs in Coventry.

    Over 3,000 fans are expected to turn out for the games, representing all four teams left in the competition.

    Telford face Basingstoke Bison in their semi-final match at 17:00 on Saturday, with the winners playing either Milton Keynes Lightning or Guildford Flames in the final the following day.

  13. Schools to get involved in education trust earlypublished at 16:56 British Summer Time 5 April 2017

    Plans to set up a joint body to oversee the running of a number of Shrosphire schools are at an early stage, but Shropshire Council hopes to get the Shropshire Education Trust off the ground quickly.

    And it is telling schools that if they join in the first phase, possibly as soon as September, they will have "greater influence on the appointment of members, trustees and senior officers".

    The head teachers of both council-maintained schools and academies have been sent invitations to get involved.

    And Shropshire Council has noted it has "a very low proportion of academies compared to other Local Authority areas".

  14. Watch: Traditional craftsmen cast large metal '50'published at 16:37 British Summer Time 5 April 2017

    Craftsmen at the Blists Hill Victorian Town museum have cast a large number 50 in iron, to mark the 50th anniversary of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust.

    The men poured molten iron into an open sand mould, using the same methods that would have been used by Abraham Darby back in 1709.

    The finished piece of metalwork will be on display across all 10 sites operated by the trust, throughout the year.

  15. Football: Haughmond promotion a 'fanstastic achievement'published at 16:18 British Summer Time 5 April 2017

    The manager of Haughmond FC says claiming the West Midlands League Premier Division title is a "fantastic achievement" and that it has become a "great little club to play for".

    The club has moved to play its games at the Shrewsbury sports village and Matt Burton praised the club for "moving with the times".

    Haughmond have still got five games to play this season, but next season they will be playing in the Midland League.

    Doctors have set a new date, external for a 12-year-old schoolboy to get a life saving bone marrow transplant.

    A coroner has ruled that a newborn baby from Myddle, who died from an infection caught at birth, could have survived with earlier intervention.

    In delivering his verdict, John Ellery said if Pippa Griffiths' mother had been given post-birth literature and there had been a complete systematic enquiry, it is more likely than not that signs would have been recognised which with appropriate care and treatment, her death could have been prevented.

    At today's inquest, the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust accepted that if the infection had been spotted and dealt with earlier, it's probable that Pippa would have survived.  

  19. Canal bridge needs £200,000 of restoration workpublished at 15:00 British Summer Time 5 April 2017

    Work to restore the Schoolhouse Bridge near Crickheath is going to cost the Inland Waterways Association £200,000 in total, with £70,000 of that coming from a recent legacy, but as you can see there is not much there at the moment.

    I went out to see the bridge earlier today and found the towpath (left) but no canal and the bridge (right) has vanished altogether and has been replaced by a flat road.
