    It's 10 years this month since PC Richard Gray was shot dead in Shrewsbury.

    The married father-of-two from Bayston Hill was a trained firearms officer, who was killed while attending a domestic dispute in Castlefields.

    Funds are now being raised for a new UK Police Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.

    The announcement also comes just eight weeks since the murder of PC Keith Palmer in London. The memorial should be in place by 2019.

    The Chinese State Circus is coming to Shrewsbury's Quarry for the first time today.

    It includes acrobats, aerial artistes, Shaolin warriors and jugglers.

    The company has been touring in Britain since 1992 and shows are on until Sunday.

    Sir Cliff Richard has been speaking ahead of his concert in Lydbury North next month.

    The music legend says he's looking forward to playing at Walcott Hall on 21 June and that he'll be playing many of his classic hits.

    Students at Derwyn College in Oswestry did a flashmob at Birmingham New Street station this morning as part of the Community Rail Awards, which recognise work within local communities.

    Gobowen Station picked up an award last year for involving diverse groups.

    Telford College of Arts and Technology has been told it's making progress in most areas after a damning inspection report last year.

    Ofsted's latest report praises reasonable improvements in the quality of teaching and in tackling under-achievement and more significant progress is recorded when it comes to qualifications for apprentices.

    But there's still said to be a problem with low ambition among some students and the amount they're challenged.

    Smoke alarms fitted by volunteers from Shropshire Fire and Rescue service have saved lives in a care home in Romania.

    Eighteen mothers and babies escaped from a fire at the home in Transylvania last month after the alarm was raised.

    The fire service has a long history of working there and today it's sending off another three old fire engines like the one here, which went last year.

    More than 400 people visited A&E departments at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and Princess Royal Hospital in Telford at the start of the week.

    The trust that runs them, external says it was the busiest day in nearly nine months.

    Unemployment fell by 5,000 in the West Midlands in the three months to March to 161,000, external, official figures show.

    However, compared with the same three months in 2016, the number of people out of work in the West Midlands is up by 4,000. 

    Overall, the Office for National Statistics' figures showed the unemployment rate across the country fell to its lowest level in 42 years.

    Letters written by Whitchurch composer Edward German go under the hammer at a Shropshire auction house.

    German was born in 1862, trained at the Royal College of Music and became musical director of the Grove Theatre in London.

    His father was the organist at the church in Whitchurch and the collection, including photos, will be sold by Trevanion and Dean who are based in the town.

  12. Plans for Roden healthcare development go before councilpublished at 08:59 British Summer Time 17 May 2017

    A plan to create a "healthcare village" on the site of Roden Hall nursing home goes before Telford and Wrekin councillors tonight. 

    The current nursing home on the site doesn't conform to current standards or legislation so the company that owns it wants to replace it with a new 66-bed facility, build bungalows and turn the current Victorian building into assisted living flats. 

    Council officers have recommended the plans for approval.

    Four-way traffic lights that have been causing delays at Reabrook roundabout in Shrewsbury have been removed this morning, two days earlier than planned. 

    But, the roads that links the column to the cinema, including parts of Old Potts Way, will be closed and two-way traffic lights will remain in place. 

    Those roadworks are due to stay for about six weeks. It's all part of Shropshire Council's plan to keep traffic out of the town centre and make better use of the outer and inner ring roads.

    Drayton Medical Practice in Market Drayton was one of the services affected by the global cyber-attack over the weekend.

    Shropshire Clinical Commissioning Group, which manages health provision in the county, says four computers were infected by the virus, which caused problems across the NHS as well as other businesses.

    A rare film of an elephant being herded down a lane in Herefordshire is being shown as part of a film festival celebrating the 70th anniversary of Indian independence.

    It's being staged between now and July by Flicks in the Sticks, an arts organisation who put on feature films in village halls and community centres across the region.

    Ian Kerry, from Flicks in the Sticks, says the elephant had been left behind by a travelling circus just before the war, when there were restrictions on moving animals.

    It was housed in a run-down building, which is still referred to as the elephant house.
