    Shropshire Council has a new leader. Peter Nutting will take over from Malcolm Pate after defeating him in a secret ballot last night.

    Steve Charmley will stay on as deputy leader of the Conservative led authority. 

    Councillor Pate had wanted to stay on as leader but his Tory group decided after 16 months it was time to move him aside and his colleague, representing Copthorne, will now take over.

    Computer problems linked to a global cyber attack at Shropshire's two main hospitals meant 37 patient appointments were cancelled over the weekend. 

    The trust that runs the Royal Shrewsbury and Telford's Princess Royal Hospital says IT systems had to be shut down with records processed on paper as a precaution. 

    Those affected have all been given new appointments.

    The Telford Tigers Ice Hockey team is no more, bringing to an end 32 years of history in the town.

    The Tigers name will not feature in the NIHL following the folding of the league the club played in last season, the EPL.

    Instead, two re-branded teams will play in the NIHL North next season, a new de facto second tier for British hockey.

    Staff at Shropshire's main hospitals had to revert to the old-fashioned way of doing things over the weekend.

    Some computer systems were shut down as a precaution to stop the virus that's caused problems across the health service from getting in.

    Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust Chief Executive Simon Wright says records of patients coming through accident and emergency, on the wards, and those coming in for appointments were all processed on paper.

    Telford College of Arts and Technology has been staging a hustings today ahead of next month's general election.

    All of the candidates for The Wrekin constituency were in attendance, apart from Rod Keyes, who is standing for the Liberal Democrats.

    The five other candidates are: Denis Allen (UKIP), Fay Easton (Independent), Dylan Harrison (Labour), Pat McCarthy (Greens) and Mark Pritchard (Conservative).

    AFC Telford United have released details of four pre-season friendly matches at the New Bucks Head.

    Aston Vila will be the first to play there on 12 July, before a Wolverhampton Wanderers under-23 side visits three days later.

    Hereford FC then come to Telford on 22 July, before a local derby with Shrewsbury Town on Wednesday 26 July.

  13. Investigation into Sleap airfield crash finds damaged switchpublished at 16:00 British Summer Time 15 May 2017

    An investigation's found that the crash-landing of a light aircraft in Shropshire last summer may have been linked to an earlier problem.

    No-one was hurt when the plane came down at Sleap airfield near Wem in July, damaging the propeller and scraping the underside.

    It diverted from Welshpool when problems with the landing gear were detected.

    The Air Accidents Investigation Branch, external now says a switch may have been damaged during a similar incident last January.   

  14. Electrical fire put out at BT's Oswestry headquarterspublished at 15:37 British Summer Time 15 May 2017

    Firefighters have been at BT's network centre near Oswestry, dealing with a "small electrical fire" in the plant room. 

    Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service says two engines were at Whittington House this afternoon. 

    It took them just under an hour to deal with the problem.

    The British showjumper, Emily Gilruth, is set to leave intensive care after she was injured in a fall at the Badminton Horse Trials on Saturday.

    The 40-year-old, who is based near Malpas in Cheshire, fell from her mount Topwood Beauand and was airlifted to Bristol's Southmead Hospital. 

    British Eventing said last week she suffered a traumatic brain injury.

    The Royal College of Nursing's annual conference continues in Liverpool today

    Cathy Briggs is there as the chair of its Shropshire branch and says times are difficult and describes morale as low.

    She claims that some nurses are using food banks and that full-time members of staff are doing agency work on top of their regular hours in order to pay their rent.  

    The union has pledged  a "summer of protest activity" across the UK over pay.

    Its members will also be balloted on industrial action unless the next government scraps a 1% pay-rise cap.

    Shropshire Council's ruling Conservative group is meeting to elect a new leader this evening. 

    Malcolm Pate, who has been in the role since December 2015, is up for re-election and is keen to retain it.

    It's believed he'll be challenged by Peter Nutting, who is the councillor for Copthorne in Shrewsbury.

  19. Health bosses say just two GP practices still affected by IT problemspublished at 13:34 British Summer Time 15 May 2017

    Shropshire's Clinical Commissioning Group now says only Market Drayton and Priorslee GP practices are affected by computer issues caused by the global cyber-attack.

    A small number, external of hospital appointments in the county were cancelled as a precaution whilst systems were down.

    The trust that runs Shrewsbury and Telford hospitals says its internal e-mail system is still turned off as a precaution, but patients are advised to turn up as normal for appointments.
