    Thieves armed with a knife have robbed two mobile phone stores in Shrewsbury town centre.

    The police say the raids took place at the Carphone Warehouse and EE shops on Pride hill yesterday afternoon.

    No-one was hurt, but the two men got away with phones after threatening staff and were seen leaving in a blue Toyota Celica.

    The Shropshire County Show takes place at the West Mid Showground in Shrewsbury tomorrow.

    It features a mix of local bands, cattle displays, and stalls and this year it's being visited by a motorcycle display team and the Wirral Marching Piping Band.

    The show traces its roots back to the days of the Shropshire County Agricultural Show, which was created in the late 19th Century.

    Seventy six jobs could go at Telford College of Arts and Technology.

    It says it currently employs about 480 staff and will be offering them the option of taking voluntary redundancy.

    The college principal Graham Guest said it was an "extremely difficult decision" but that the college had been operating with a "staff surplus" for several years and that had to be addressed.

    He said the cuts would have no impact on students.

    Shropshire wheelchair racer Ben Rowlings has set a new European record over 800 metres.

    The 21-year-old from Newport beat his own lifetime best in the T34 category for athletes with cerebral palsy.

    It wouldn't be a bank holiday in England if there weren't warnings over heavy rain.

    The Met Office has issued a yellow weather alert for thundery showers on Saturday afternoon and their affected area covers most of Staffordshire and north Shropshire, external.

    They say the rain could bring "localised flooding, hail and frequent lightning".

    Despite Brexit, members of Oswestry twinned town association are keen to keep their link with Combs-Le-Ville near Paris.

    A party set off this morning to stay with French families in the town south of the French capital.

    Oswestry twinner Dave Davies says that they're setting off today for a week of "entente cordiale".

    Telford's new mayor has been elected by his fellow Telford and Wrekin councillors.

    Labour councillor Stephen Reynolds will take over from Rae Evans, with Councillor Raj Mehta as his deputy.

    Mr Reynolds told last night's council meeting he was diagnosed with a terminal cancer 10 years ago and was told then he had only three months to live, so he had decided to support Severn Hospice as his chosen charity, during his term in office.

    Two men have been injured, one of whom was airlifted to hospital, after the car they were travelling in rolled down a bank and hit a tree last night.

    The incident happened in Broome Road, Aston-on-Clun just before 19:50.

    One man was trapped for nearly an hour.

    A specialist team at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital have been awarded Network of Excellence status for their care of people with neuromuscular conditions.

    Muscular Dystrophy UK, awarded the status to the hospital along with other specialist teams in the North West region.

    Neuromuscular is a broad term that encompasses many diseases and ailments that impair the functioning of the muscles.

    The charity made the award for the orthopaedic hospital's work training professionals in the conditions.

    Prof Mary Beard, author and TV presenter, will be visiting her old school Church Preen Primary today.

    Mary was born in Much Wenlock in 1955 and went on the be educated at Shrewsbury High School and then Newnham College, Cambridge.

    Her television work started in 2010 when she presented Pompeii: Life and Death in a Roman Town.

    Her mother was headteacher at Church Preen Primary. The current head, Dave Tinker, hopes Mary's story will enrich the children's learning.
