    West Mercia police are investigating five allegations of historical sex offences in Whitchurch.

    BBC Shropshire understands the claims involve a GP who died 17 years ago.

    One alleged victim, who doesn't want to be identified, claims he was abused at the surgery in the 1970s when he was nine and then until he was 13.

    He says he's spoken out because he wants others to come forward.

    Shropshire horticulturalists David Austin have picked up a gold award at the Chelsea Flower Show for their rose garden exhibit.

  7. Armed police on patrol Shrewsburypublished at 17:30 British Summer Time 23 May 2017

    Armed officers will begin patrolling the streets of Shrewsbury from Tuesday with the police saying they hope it will reassure people following last night's attack in Manchester.

    West Mercia Police says it has no specific intelligence suggesting a threat in the town, but that it has been reviewing its security plans with a number of events there this bank holiday weekend.

    The force has also promised an increased presence in the town centre.

    Twenty-two people were killed and 59 injured when a suicide bomber attacked concertgoers at the city's arena.

    A £10,000 lottery grant has been given to the North Telford Heritage Trail project to create a trail route, website and app.

    The money will also be used to pay for a series of community events and provide training to a team of volunteers.

    The St Georges Community Group is behind the idea and says it will explore the local mining history and people's memories of the area.

    The route will take in St Georges, Oakengates, Priorslee and Telford town centre.

    In the last three years, 16 West Mercia Police staff have faced disciplinary action for looking up people's police records for unofficial reasons.

    Eight of those proceedings involved police constables and two involved sergeants, with the remainder being PCSOs and backroom staff.

    Two people ended up being dismissed and another two resigned.

    Over the same time period, one officer from the Warkwickshire force was disciplined and dismissed.

    Severn Trent, the water company that supplies most of Shropshire, has reported a rise in profits.

    The company said its pre-tax profits rose by more than 4% to £525m in the year to March.

    Severn Trent also said it had seen a reduction in sewer floodings, supply interruptions and leakages and had been rewarded with £47.6m for meeting watchdog Ofwat's targets.

    The Catholic bishop of Shrewsbury has called for hate to be overcome by love in the wake of last night's Manchester terrorist attack.

  14. Demolition plans to pave way for power station sell-offpublished at 14:41 British Summer Time 23 May 2017

    The planned demolition of the conveyor belts at Ironbridge power station is the first step in a process which will eventually see the site sold off by its owners, Uniper.

    The company said it decided to put the 141 hectare site on the market after concluding "it wasn’t suitable for any future conventional power generation projects".

    The coal-fired power station, which converted to using biomass, started generating in 1967 and ceased operations in November 2015.

    There have been offers of support and prayer from people in Shropshire, following last nights terror attack in Manchester.

    The Methodist churches in Wellington and Horsehay are opening up this evening for people to pray for the victims and their families and candles will be lit in memory of those who lost their lives.

    Otley Road in Shrewsbury will be closed on the evening of the Rod Stewart concert at Shrewsbury Town's stadium.

    Shropshire Council says it will be shut between 16:00 and 00:00 to allow concert-goers to get in and out of the stadium on 7 June.

    West Mercia Police say security measures will be reviewed today, following the suicide attack in Manchester last night.

    The Chief Constable, Anthony Bangham, also urged the public to help by reporting suspicious behaviour to the Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789 321 or by using a secure form, external on the government website.

  18. Drone rules reminder from policepublished at 12:56 British Summer Time 23 May 2017

    Following Monday's near-miss between a helicopter and a drone near Newport, police are reminding people about the Civil Aviation Authority rules for drone-flying., external

    The CAA says they should be flown no higher than 122m (400ft) and not within 30m (9ft) of people or property or 150m (46ft) of crowds or a built-up area.

    The rules also state operators must make sure they have their drone in sight at all times and that they must stay well away from other aircraft or airfields.
