    Plans to widen the main road through the village of Woore, near Market Drayton, to allow HS2 construction traffic to pass through have been criticised by people living there.

    The company building the high-speed rail link, which skirts the north east corner of the county, is consulting on the plans and says it will work to minimise the impact.

    The critics include local surveyor Richard Goodwin, who said the disruption would last up to nine years and the impact shouldn't be underestimated.

    A murder investigation is under way after an attack on a 67-year-old Shrewsbury man in Halfway House yesterday afternoon.

    Police say paramedics were called to an address at in the village, near Shrewsbury, at 16:40 and found the man dead with serious injuries to his head and torso.

    Efforts are now being made to trace the man's movements over the past few days and his next-of-kin have been informed.

  3. Shrewsbury chief exec excited by safe-standing proposalspublished at 13:38 British Summer Time 27 June 2017

    Shrewbury Town hopes to learn within weeks if it's got permission from the Sports Ground Safety Authority to install a safe-standing section in its stadium.

    The club is the first in England and Wales to bid for a certificate since the authority opened the door to applications earlier this year.

    Chief executive Brian Caldwell said it should create a better atmosphere because "more people are encouraged to sing and get behind the team".

    Shrewsbury-based Ferco Seating, external are preparing to carry out the work after installing 2,900 seats at Celtic's Parkhead stadium last year.

    The company also installed a small safe-standing section at Bristol City's Ashton Gate stadium in 2014, but they are only used for rugby matches.

    Police have described a robbery in Shrewsbury on Friday as a "particularly nasty attack" and say it could have resulted in serious injury for the victim.

    The man in his 20s was walking down an alleyway close to Emmanuel Church (pictured above) on Mount Pleasant Road when a Skoda pulled up behind him and he was assaulted by five men with Manchester accents, one of them with a bladed weapon.

    He was left with injuries to his head, body and legs and had cash, keys and a Kindle Fire tablet stolen.

    Shrewsbury Town has become the first English football club to apply to have safe standing at its stadium.

    The club aims to have 500 rail seats fitted and in use, in a section of the Salop Leisure stand, before the end of the coming season.

    It is likely to cost up to £375,000, with money raised by crowdfunding.

    It would be tempting to see matches against the champions of Gibraltar as a safe passage to the second qualifying round of the Champions League, but Lincoln Red Imps proved last season that the island is capable of pulling off a shock.

    It was a massive surprise when they beat the Scottish champions Celtic 1-0 in the home leg of their qualifying match last season.

    Wildlife specialists will be surveying the flora, fauna and animal life around Oswestry's historic hillfort this weekend.

    Conservationists hope their findings will provide a snapshot of the ancient site's ecology.

    The site is an important haven for wildlife and a number of species which are either protected, at risk, or uncommon in other areas of Shropshire, including the great crested newt, skylark, greater broomrape and violet oil beetle.

    The information will be used to to help guide the management of the 3,000-year-old monument.

    Police in Shrewsbury have renewed their appeal for witnesses following the death of an 11-year-old girl.

    Olivia-Violet Reeves, from Worthen, was hit by car while walking along Mytton Oak Road almost a fortnight ago.

    Police say they'd particularly like to speak to the driver of a white van, a navy blue vehicle with a roof rack and a cyclist riding a push bike.

    A 77-year-old man from Shrewsbury, arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving whilst under the influence of alcohol, has been released while inquiries continue.

    The New Saints of Oswestry play Europa FC, from Gibraltar, in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League at Park Hall tonight.

    Head coach Scott Ruscoe says preparations have gone well despite the loss of last season's record-breaking manager Craig Harrison to Hartlepool.

    A meeting to discuss maternity services at Shropshire's acute hospitals is due to take place today.

    The trust, which runs the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals, has completed a review of how they deal with investigations into problems in maternity and today's meeting will discuss its findings.

    Parents whose babies died at the trust say they haven't been invited to the meeting.

    The trust says they have been offered one-to-one sessions to discuss what's in the report which is due to be published on Thursday.

    The Bucks have completed the signing of their longest-serving player Jack Rea after the midfielder agreed new terms.

  13. Stretch of the A49 to close for 10 dayspublished at 08:45 British Summer Time 27 June 2017

    From Saturday, Network Rail will completely close the A49 at Onibury, near Craven Arms, for 10 days.

    Traffic will be taken through Much Wenlock, which will mean a diversion of more than 50 miles.

    The closure is to allow for repairs to be made to the level crossing.

    Local Conservative councillor David Turner has said he's worried about the impact on the town.

    But Network Rail says the work is essential and can't wait.

    Joule's Brewery is to take on the production of Everards Ales as the 169-year-old Leicester-based brewery moves into a smaller facility.

    The Everards team will be working alongside the Shropshire brewers making Old Original and Sunchaser golden ale.

    The two companies have been working towards the partnership for the past year.

    Management at Joule's say they hope it will lead to further investment at the Market Drayton plant, and the creation of new jobs.
