  4. PCC hits out at criticism of fire service takeover planspublished at 09:38 British Summer Time 21 September 2017

West Mercia's Police and Crime Commissioner has hit out at councillors who've criticised his plans to take control of the fire services in the area.

Shropshire and Hereford and Worcester's fire services are currently overseen by fire authorities made up of local councillors.

John Campion says his plan could save £4m a year.

Councillors across the counties have spoken out against the plans - but a public consultation suggests 61% of people support PCC John Campion's idea.

The Fire Brigades Union in Shropshire said it would "vigorously oppose" any move to remove its fire control from the county.

    Quote Message

I'm not surprised local authorities are concerned about this. Some of those councillors will lose their paid role on the fire authority, but for me this is about public safety."

  16. Increase in demand behind veterans charity changespublished at 16:06 British Summer Time 20 September 2017

    Andy Giddings
    BBC Shropshire

"Unprecedented demand" is being blamed for the closure of Combat Stress's residential programmes in Newport.

The charity said the number of referrals for ex servicemen and women needing treatment had risen by 143% over the last decade.

It also received more than 10,000 calls to its helpline last year and referred 2,400 veterans for treatment.

It said the increase in demand had forced it to consider a new strategy, which will involve more people being treated at home.

Audley Court will become a centre for arranging this treatment in the community.

    Quote Message

Audley Court will remain an important hub for the services we deliver to veterans across Wales and the Midlands, whilst playing a vital new role in shaping the development of our future treatment programmes so we can best serve the veterans who need us."

The fans have been trying to raise the money with an online crowdfunding page and have now passed the £50,000 mark.

They say that the saving was made by cutting a "superfluous row of rail seating barriers".

    Quote Message

That is a great unexpected boost for the campaign and I must say a big thank you to the SGSA for their expert guidance. It’s fantastic to be able to say that we have raised 80% of the target.
