  2. Watch: Spitfire pilot, 96, to take part in Siege of Malta commemorationspublished at 17:13 British Summer Time 19 September 2017

    The last remaining Spitfire pilot to serve in the Siege of Malta is planning to return for commemorations on the island next month.

    It's 75 years since the siege was ended by the Allies and Allan Scott from Wem, Shropshire, has been invited back to take part in ceremonies which will include Prince Charles.

    The 96-year-old also served in the Battle of Britain, but said the air battle over Malta was arguably more fierce.

  3. Increase in complaints due to 'change in procedures' say policepublished at 16:51 British Summer Time 19 September 2017

    A 44% increase in the number of complaints about West Mercia Police is due to a change "recording procedures" and an effort to make sure "people are able to make complaints more easily", the force say.

    The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) say there were 733 complaints against the Mercia Police in 2016/17, compared to 509 the previous year.

    In a statement, the force say the IPCC figures are "helpful to us in making improvements".

  4. University to welcome new studentspublished at 16:43 British Summer Time 19 September 2017

    Another 100 undergraduate students are due to arrive in Shrewsbury at the weekend, ready to start courses at the University Centre Shrewsbury.

    It's the third year the off-shoot of the University of Chester has been offering undergraduate courses, with students due to attend from as far afield as Pakistan.

    Lectures will mostly be held at the Guildhall and Rowley's House and a number of welcome events are being lined up, to help the new arrivals settle in to life in Shrewsbury.

    The long-term aim for the university centre to expand over the next five to 10 years, until it can become an independent university.

  5. School chefs feel the heat in cook-offpublished at 16:13 British Summer Time 19 September 2017

    School chefs in Telford are being to be challenged to a cookery competition, with the first heat taking place today.

    Telford and Wrekin Council is opening it up to staff at primary and secondary schools and each entrant will have two hours to serve up a main course and a dessert with a maximum budget of £1.27 per serving.

    Each chef has to prepare six servings, to present to the judges and today will see Rachel Fletcher from Lilleshall Primary School, Sharon Deavall of St Mary’s RC Primary in Madeley, and catering supervisor Becca Bowdler battle it out for a place in the final on 12 October.

    The winner gets the Let's Dine Chef of the Year trophy, along with a personalised chef's jacket and either a year's golf membership or a year's gym subscription.

  6. Woman has life-threatening injuries after crashpublished at 15:45 British Summer Time 19 September 2017

    An elderly woman has been flown to a major trauma centre after suffering "potentially life-threatening injuries" after a crash between a car and a lorry at Grindley Brook this lunchtime.

    The collision happened on the A41, outside the Grindley Brook garage at 12:20 and the woman, who was driving the car, was unconscious when paramedics arrived.

    The car suffered "significant damage", but the lorry driver was unhurt, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

  8. Arson attack destroys cars at garagepublished at 14:39 British Summer Time 19 September 2017

    An arsonist set six cars on fire at a garage in Llanymynech last night, police have revealed.

    They were called to Pant Motor Bodies on North Road at 22:10, to reports of several vehicles alight and the fire then spread, causing damage to a nearby home.

    Nobody was hurt, but the police say there was "substantial damage" to the building and the vehicles.

  9. Flood-hit maternity unit to remain shut until tomorrowpublished at 14:12 British Summer Time 19 September 2017

    Shrewsbury's maternity unit will be closed until midday tomorrow after flooding.

    It closed at 17:00 yesterday, because of damage caused by rain which leaked through the roof.

    Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust had hoped to have it open again this morning, but said repairs were taking longer than expected.

    The closure last night resulted in three postnatal women being sent home and women due to give birth were re-directed to Telford.

    The hospitals say no women sent to Telford's Princess Royal Hospital gave birth last night.

    It is expected to reopen on Wednesday and patients are asked to go the Princess Royal Hospital instead.

    West Mercia Police is the slowest in the country at resolving complaints, figures from the Independent Police Complaints Commission have revealed., external

    In 2016/17 the average number of days for the forces to conclude complaint cases was 183, for those cases which didn't have to go to court.

    The next highest was Essex Police, which averaged 162 days and the national average was 102.

    The figures also show 61% of cases went to a full investigation, 27% were dealt with through a less time-demanding local resolution and the remaining 12% were either dropped or resolved more informally by the parties involved.

    There's a warning that the shortage of neurologists in Shropshire is having a knock-on effect on surrounding counties.

    Shropshire's GPs have been unable to refer patients within the county since March "due to staffing gaps".

    The trust it's expected to announce when services will resume in the coming weeks.

    In Staffordshire, the independent body Healthwatch has published a report which says patients with Parkinsons, Motor Neuron Disease and Multiple Sclerosis are failing to receive the right levels of care.

    Healthwatch wants feedback on how patients have been finding the service - with long waiting lists a common problem around the West Midlands.

    The maternity unit at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital was closed last night because of a leaky roof.

    Women had to be transferred to Telford's hospital after flash flooding made part of the building inaccessible.

    The Shrewbury and Telford Hospital Trust had planned to re-open the maternity unit this morning, but it remains closed while checks are carried out.

    The poor state of the building has been an issue for the trust for many years.

  16. Bed push fundraisers 'determined' to do it again next yearpublished at 11:36 British Summer Time 19 September 2017

    The fundraisers who had a donation of £2,500 for Ludlow hospital turned down because of their fancy dress outfits say they're determined to try again next year.

    The men pushed a bed around the town, dressed as female nurses, but the Shropshire Community Health Trust rejected the money on the grounds it was "demeaning" and "insulting" to nurses.

    Peter Corfield from the Ludlow Hospital League of Friends couldn't say if they would dress up in the same way and who they planned to give the money to.

    This year's donation has been given to two local trainee first responders instead, with Mr Corfield saying they were "looking for something that would produce a long-term local benefit".

    Schools in Shropshire have been given extra money from the Government.

    Ministers have been forced to look again at their National Funding Formula - which decides how much a school gets for each pupil they teach.

    It means Shropshire Council will receive nearly £3.7m more over the next two years.

    Telford and Wrekin Council will get an extra 2.7% next year - that's more than the national average.

    Critics say it's still not enough and providing a balanced budget will remain difficult.
