    A drug user from Crosspool who strangled his grandmother and drowned his aunt in a bath, will be sentenced for the killings at court today. 

    21-year-old Christopher Whelan armed himself with an axe and a penknife during the attacks on Julie Hill and 75-year-old Rose Hill, after allegedly struggling against an "irresistible impulse" to kill others.

    Whelan - from Dransfield Road in Crosspool - later claimed to have heard Satan directing him as he killed the victims at his aunt's home in Shirebrook in February.

    He admitted the manslaughter of both victims on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

    A spokesman for the Prison Officers Association at HMP Moorland says the jail is trying to "get back to some normality" following yesterday's riot.

    Paul Lennon says there has been some fire damage and problems with the lights after inmates at the prison near Doncaster smashed 36 cells.

    60 prisoners have been moved to other jails.

    Politicians in northern England say they want Chancellor Philip Hammond to prioritise transport links in the region to make it more attractive to investors.

    The Labour politicians, representing Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield and Liverpool, say northern motorways are reaching "saturation point".

    And they say train capacity in what has been dubbed the Northern Powerhouse economic region is "at the limit".

    The Treasury says an extra £1.3bn will be spent UK-wide to tackle congestion.

    The branch chairman of HMP Moorland Prison Officers Association has spoken following trouble at the jail near Doncaster.

    Paul Lennon said rioting broke out at around 17:45 yesterday during "lock-up time".

    Over 30 cells were smashed during the disturbance - 60 prisoners have now been moved to different jails.

    South Yorkshire Police say the cost of providing 12 officers to police last week's controversial tree cutting near Endcliffe Park, was done at "no additional cost". 

    Three protesters were arrested after council contractors Amey began cutting down trees in Rustlings Road in the early hours of the morning.

    The good news is that all lanes have been re-opened on the M1 Southbound, after they were closed due to a broken down lorry.

    The bad news is that traffic's still backing up between J36, A61 (Birdwell) and J34, A631 (Meadowhall).

    Campaigners angry over Sheffield Council's handling of tree felling near Endcliffe Park last week are calling for more transparency over its dealings with contractors Amey.

    There was outrage when Amey and the police turned up to cut down trees in Rustlings Road in the early hours of the morning.

    Sheffield City Council claim saving them would have cost £10,000 per tree.

    The Prison Officers Association say that 60 inmates have been moved from HMP Moorland to other jails after a riot last night. 

    Prisoners smashed up their cells, putting 36 on one wing out of action because of fire and water damage.

    Campaigners against the felling of roadside trees near Endcliffe Park, say it's a scandal that key details of the authority's contract with the construction company Amey are being kept confidential.

    There was outrage last week when Amey and the police turned up to cut down trees in Rustlings Road in the early hours of the morning. 

    The council say the bill for engineering work to keep those trees would have been £10,000 per tree.

    Specially-trained staff had to be sent to HMP Moorland near Doncaster to control an "isolated incident".

    The trouble between a "small number" of inmates on one wing of the facility was quelled overnight, the Prison Service said.

    One prisoner was injured but did not require hospital treatment. No staff were hurt.

    HM Inspectorate of Prisons found "high" levels of violence in its latest inspection of the jail in February.
