    A Rotherham councillor sentenced to a six-month curfew order after being found guilty of sexual assault says he will resign his post.

    He has issued a statement via his solicitor Steve Smith of Wilford Smith:

    Having considered the financial options open to Mr Roddison it has been decided with great reluctance not to appeal. His income has been taken from him, and consequently he is resigning his position as a councillor."

  2. Victim named as murder inquiry continues in Sheffieldpublished at 16:34 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2016

    A 40-year-old man who died from head injuries after being seriously assaulted in Sheffield has been named today as Ahmed Sayeed Adan. 

    Mr Adan, from Burngreave, was standing outside Emin Supermarket on Spital Hill, at about 03:45 on Sunday 20 November, when he was assaulted.

    He was taken to hospital, where he died on Tuesday. 

    Mr Adan's family has asked for privacy during this difficult time. 

    It is believed he may have been approached outside the store and detectives are keen to hear from anyone who may have been in the area at the time.

    A Rotherham councillor found guilty of sexual assault has been sentenced to a six-month curfew order and an indefinite restraining order preventing him having contact with his victim.

    Andrew Roddison, a former Labour member, groped another councillor at an event following a parade in the town, police said following his conviction at Leeds Magistrates' Court.

    The Brinsworth and Catcliffe councillor has not announced an intention to stand down and he can't be removed as a councillor as he has not received a prison term.

    Intake Primary School in Sheffield has got 166 pupils off school today. 

    They're suffering a sickness bug, but health experts says it's not the norovirus.

    There'll be a deep clean of the school in coming days - and parents are being told to keep their children off school for 48 hours if they're poorly.

    The annual anti-drink drive campaign by the police begins today.

    Last year 139 people were stopped and arrested for drink driving throughout December in South Yorkshire compared with 85 in September. 

    Officers will be conducting extra patrols and breath tests.

    Supporters of two men charged over a tree protest in Sheffield have vowed to carry on the campaign.

    The Sheffield Trees Action Group now claims 4,000 members and many more supporters.

  15. Shelter charity highlights homelessness in South Yorkshirepublished at 13:19 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2016

    With a total of 221 homeless people, Doncaster has the highest rate of homelessness in the region at one in every 1,372 people, according to figures from Shelter.

    In Sheffield it's one in every 2,424 (total number of homeless 231).

    In Rotherham it's one in every 3,329 (total number of homeless 80).

    Shelter has totted up the official statistics from four different forms of recorded homelessness.

    These were:

    • national government statistics on rough sleepers
    • statistics on those in temporary accommodation
    • the number of people housed in hostels
    • the number of people waiting to be housed by social services departments (obtained through Freedom of Information requests).

  17. Trial date set for Sheffield tree protesterspublished at 12:39 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2016

    A trial date has been set of 9 March 2017 for two tree campaigners who appeared at Sheffield Magistrates' Court today.

    Simon Crump, 44, and Calvin Payne, 56, pleaded not guilty and were bailed by the court.

    The two men, both from Sheffield, have been charged under Section 241 of the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992, external, following the protest against plans to cut down the tree in Marden Road, Nether Edge.
