    A deal is on the table which will potentially secure the future of Tata Steel's sites in South Yorkshire. 

    Liberty House is the preferred bidder to buy the Stocksbridge, Rotherham and Brinsworth plants in a £100m deal which could be done by early next year.

    The news of movement today on the future of Tata Steel's plants in Rotherham and Stocksbridge has been welcomed by local MP Kevin Barron.

    A man wrongly convicted of sex offences against a child is blaming police handling of the case. 

    26-year-old Rassam Ali says key evidence in his favour from a witness was ignored by officers who wanted to make an example of him. 

    He's now seen a formal not guilty verdict delivered after the prosecution dropped the idea of a re-trial  - but only after he served more than a year in jail.

    ​Research into sustainable energy at the University of Sheffield is helping a remote village in India to access electricity for the first time.  

    Dr Mark Walker, Research Associate from the University’s Energy 2050 research institute, has collaborated with UK and Indian partners to install a sustainable system from biological waste and novel solar photovoltaic technology for a West Bengal village.   

    The system provides electrical energy needs for villagers, street and communal lighting and power to a medical centre and school

    There are concerns that the revised HS2 route will bisect a huge swathe of nature used by runners, walkers and riders in South Yorkshire.

    BBC Sheffield has learned that an apology from Sheffield City Council over their handling of tree felling in Rustlings Road came a day after the leader received an angry letter from Labour party members.

    Sheffield Central Constituency Labour Party wrote a letter to Julie Dore on November 24, describing the council's actions as "sinister" and saying party members were resigning over the issue. 

    They added that local activists were "placed in the position of defending what they believe to be the indefensible".  

  12. Sheffield's Go Outdoors chain bought by JD Sportspublished at 10:05 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2016

    Sheffield-based firm Go Outdoors has been sold to JD Sports. 

    The firm, which has 58 stores around the country, has been sold for £112.3m.

    As a result of the sale, Go Outdoors founders Paul Caplan and John Graham will leave the business.

    An accident involving two cars, a lorry and a van on the M1 Northbound between junction 31 (A57) and junction 32 (M18) is causing long delays.

    Two lanes are closed and there is queuing traffic for four miles.

    A two-year-old child has been injured by a quad biker in Rawmarsh, external who knocked over a pushchair on a path.

    The quad bike hit the pushchair, causing it to roll over with the child inside, before the rider fled. 

    The toddler suffered minor facial injuries.

    Police in Rotherham are trying to find the rider of the quad bike who was on a path next to Rolls Crescent last Thursday at about 17:20.

    Doncaster Council has admitted putting too many people in residential placements rather than offering them care in their own homes.

    It means the local authority has had to pay more for care services than other authorities of a similar size.

    In the draft budget for next year the council says only people with the highest level of need will go into care homes.
