    New Crewe Alexandra signing Danny Hollands, who joined the club on Friday, says his transfer "happened pretty quickly".

    The 30-year-old came on as a substitute in the Alex's 1-1 draw at Newport on Saturday.

    Today he says the club he's joined has several "fantastic young players".

    A couple who met while staying at homeless hostel in Stoke-on-Trent have got married today.

    The charity Brighter Futures, external says Sandra Simonsen and Alison Dunn met in the summer of 2013 and got engaged a few months later.

    The pair were living in the 90 Hope Street hostel in Hanley at the time. 

    Speaking ahead of the marriage today, Alison said being with Sandra had kept her alive: "I'm sure I would be dead if it wasn't for her."

    Figures published by the organisation that runs clinical trials for the NHS says the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust is the leading recruiter in the country for cardiac research. 

    The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), external says more than half a million people in the West Midlands have taken part in clinical trials in the last decade.

    It says drugs firms are choosing the region to carry out trials because of the diverse population and the number of hospitals and universities involved in medical research. 

    NIHR says for patients, it gives them access to new drugs and treatments not available on the NHS.

    The manager of a Staffordshire abattoir has been jailed after admitting dozens of charges including several animal welfare and food safety offences.

    Anthony Bagshaw, 36, of Back Lane, Butterton, pleaded guilty at a previous hearing to a total of 24 charges.

    Stafford Crown Court

    The county council says he was the manager of S Bagshaw and Sons butchers in Butterton, Leek, which ceased trading last year.

    Today, at Stafford Crown Court he was given 10 months in prison after a prosecution by the authority, the government and the Food Standards Agency.

    Staffordshire's Olympic gold medallist Joe Clarke says he's glad he helped start the surge that led to Team GB's medal rush at Rio 2016.

    Clarke's gold in the kayak K1 was one of 67 medals won by British athletes over the last two weeks. 

    He's been speaking to the BBC ahead of last night's closing ceremony alongside Bryony Page who became the first British woman to win an Olympic trampoline medal by claiming silver.

    She says she is delighted to be inspiring children to take up her sport.

  14. Slavery reports rise fivefold, Salvation Army sayspublished at 12:23 British Summer Time 22 August 2016

    Just over 13% of "modern slavery” victims helped by the Salvation Army in 2015/16 were referred from the West Midlands, according to new data.

    The charity says it supported 1,805 people in England and Wales during the period – nearly a five-fold increase in the number since 2012.

    Anne Read, director of anti-trafficking and modern slavery at the Salvation Army, said the nature of the crime meant it was "always difficult to know the full extent of the problem" and the increase in referrals could be because there were more victims but also "improvements in training and awareness-raising".

    Nobody has been injured in a "tent explosion" at V Festival, an ambulance worker says.

    Liz Parkes is one of West Midlands Ambulance Services medics at the 2016 event which is winding down today.

    She tweeted that the fire service onsite had "dealt with" the explosion.

  16. V Festival: Increase in festival-goers needing medical treatmentpublished at 11:45 British Summer Time 22 August 2016

    More than 1,200 people needed medical treatment at the V Festival in Staffordshire at the weekend, external, according to the ambulance service.

    The wet weather led to many people getting hurt due to slips, trips and falls, West Midlands Ambulance Service says. A number were also treated for drinking too much alcohol. 

    The service says the total treated was 1,218, an increase on 2015 - 40 were taken to hospital for more treatment.
