    It must be autumn from this first picture - Chris Hollingworth spotted these conkers on the ground in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

  2. Call from MP to 'beef up' HS2 plans for Crewepublished at 09:22 British Summer Time 12 October 2016

    There are calls from a Cheshire MP to develop the high speed HS2 rail plans for Crewe to better benefit more of the north west.

    Last November Crewe was picked above Stoke-on-Trent as the next key staging post on the route to Manchester.

    The Labour MP for Chester Chris Matheson told a debate in parliament that making the town into a regional HS2 hub makes wider sense.

    Transport Minister Andrew Jones said proposals to make Crewe a hub do make sense but no final decisions have yet been made.

    Police have been inundated with reports of "clowns" jumping out, scaring and chasing people and even carrying "weapons".

    Drivers planning to use the A50 in Staffordshire in the early hours of tomorrow morning are being warned of a full closure of the road between 01:00 and 04:00.

    The county council say it'll be shut both ways between the Blythe Bridge roundabout and the B5030 as overhead power lines are removed, external, as part of a junction improvement project.

    A year-long trial to charge less for using car parks in Stoke-on-Trent could become permanent, the councillor in charge has said.

    From 21 November, 28 car parks across the city will cost £1 to use after 15:00 for a year. 

    The city council says they expect the move to boost trade and support the evening economy, external and, if it turns out to be a benefit, it could be a permanent move.

    The Japanese company Fujitsu says its announcement of a reduction of up to 1,800 jobs in the UK is so it can streamline operations to remain competitive. 

    The electronics firm also emphasised to the BBC that the decision had nothing to do with the Brexit vote.

    The Unite union, which says workers will be affected at the company's sites including Crewe, added that it was a blow to staff who have "given their all" to make the UK subsidiary highly profitable.

    A spokesman for Fujitsu told BBC Radio Stoke this afternoon that they have 169 staff at their Crewe offices who work on a range of IT specialisms.

    The Japanese electronics company Fujitsu says it's planning to shed up to 1,800 jobs in the UK. 

    Unite said the move was a "hammer blow" for workers and added that the redundancies will affect the firm's major sites which include the Crewe offices on Mallard Way.

    Fujitsu says it's part of a "transformation programme" and there won't be any job cuts before 2017. 

    The cuts represent about 18% of the workforce.
