  8. Ipswich Town players 'don't get new kit every time'published at 17:14 British Summer Time 4 August 2016

    Philippa Taylor
    BBC Local Live

I've often wondered whether footballers wear new kit each time they play - and what happens to the old shirts and shorts.

We've found out the answer at Portman Road anyway, where James Pullen says Ipswich Town players "don't get" new kit every time.

He adds that it's difficult to get past himself and Ken Goody (pictured): "If they want to give one away we have a bit of a grump on, because we don't obviously want them to give it away, but in this day and age footballers give them away quite a lot of the time, and we have to be prepared... and we need to be able to replace it."

  9. Why Ipswich Town players didn't like their 'collared' shirtspublished at 17:10 British Summer Time 4 August 2016

The eagle-eyed among Ipswich Town's supporters may have been wondering why the collars on the players' shirts remained in place last season, regardless of the weather conditions and the actions on the pitch.

Tony Chittock, from the club's matchday staff, explained: "When the players jumped up for their corners, the collars flapped up and the players didn't like it.

"So Gwen,[his wife], had to stitch all the collars down - about 300 shirts - so the players have a lot to be thankful for."

We regularly bring you news of injuries, signings, and managerial comments from Portman Road, but what I don't think we've done in the past is take much of a look behind the scenes at some of the daily housekeeping that takes place.

This is the laundry at the stadium where all the match equipment and kit is washed and dried.

According to kit man James Pullen, one of the driers has been there for some time. He said: "I think it was here when I was a player, and we're looking at 1999-2004, that sort of time", adding: "But it 's still going strong at the moment."

The Blues' latest Championship campaign begins in less than 48 hours against Barnsley, and McCarthy gave his pre-match press conference at Town's Playford Road training ground earlier.

"My thoughts on pre season are well documented; you simply cannot be motivated to the extent that you will be when the league gets under way for real," McCarthy said.

"It's now when the tingles come along with the nerves, and I always preferred to have those nerves and the butterflies as a player, as they helped me to perform better."
