    BBC Local Live

The 56-day driving ban given to Louie Howlett for his 154-mile an hour stint on the A11 has been branded a "joke", by Suffolk's Police and Crime Commissioner Tim Passmore .

Howlett, 21, appeared at Bury St Edmunds Magistrates yesterday. Along with the 56-day ban he was also ordered to pay fines and costs of £365.

    Tim Passmore

Tim Passmore said: "It's way below what is appropriate, I'm mystified as to why the system only enables the magistrates, as I understand it, to give a sentence with a maximum of only 56 days... it's not acceptable."

  12. Speeding: More of your reactionpublished at 17:42 British Summer Time 2 August 2016

We've got one more email to share with you, following today's story of an eight-week ban for driver Louie Howlett, who was caught doing 154mph on the A11 at Icklingham in April.

Andrew has emailed us to say he was recently given three points on his licence and fined £100, for doing 36mph in a 30mph limit. He asks: "How on earth can he receive a pittance of a fine at £395 and not even a full 2 months ban?

"Sentencing guidelines talk about means to pay and weekly salary, but if he is possession of a car capable of almost 160mph then it’s hard to understand that he would be of limited means."

  14. Speeding driver: How the story unfoldedpublished at 17:16 British Summer Time 2 August 2016

If you're just joining us, here's a reminder of events following today's appearance at Bury St Edmunds Magistrates' Court of Louie Howlett, who'd been recorded by police driving at 154mph on the A11 at Icklingham in April.

    • Howlett receives a 56-day driving ban, and ordered to pay a total of £365 in fines and costs
    • Insp David Giles says it's a "disgraceful" speed and that they're "disappointed" at the sentence
    • Police reveal they've lodged a request for a review of sentence with the Crown Prosecution Service
    • Road safety charity Brake, external say courts need to crack down on this sort of "dangerous" behaviour to provide a stronger deterrent
    • Former head of roads policing Chris Spinks says tougher sentences for speeding drivers should be used "as a deterrent"

  15. Tougher sentences for speeding drivers 'should be used as a deterrent'published at 16:58 British Summer Time 2 August 2016

A former head of roads policing for Norfolk and Suffolk says that while he can't comment on the specifics of the sentencing today of Lakenheath man Louie Howlett for excessive speeding, there are much more stringent sentences available to the courts which "should be used as a deterrent".

    Chris Spinks

Chris Spinks added that there is "medical evidence that particularly with males, the decision making and risk taking processes are not maturing until beyond the age of about 23.

"This driver was 21, and I can only imagine that had a part to play in why he would be driving at these ridiculous speeds."

Stuart Dewing, from Bungay, was "the most wonderful, caring and 'cheeky' daddy, uncle, brother and nephew who will be missed so very much... our thoughts are with the other family who were involved."

Emergency services were called to the scene at 16:30 following the collision.

Mr Dewing, 35, was airlifted to the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital where he died.

  18. Road safety charity on 'lenient' sentence given to speeding driverpublished at 16:16 British Summer Time 2 August 2016

The road safety charity Brake, external has issued a statement following the 56-day driving ban imposed on Lakenheath driver Louie Howlett, external (pictured), who was clocked driving at 154mph on the A11.

    Louie Howlett

Gary Rae, campaigns and communications director, said: “Drivers who recklessly speed put not only their own lives, but those of other road users, at severe risk.

"Breaking the speed limit by such a shocking amount shows an appalling disregard for the safety of innocent road users.

"We are disappointed to see such a lenient sentence in this case – drivers who selfishly flout the law need to be punished accordingly.

"Courts need to crack down on this dangerous behaviour to provide a stronger deterrent.”

  19. Take a look at a purple swamphenpublished at 15:50 British Summer Time 2 August 2016

We've been talking about the appearance at the RSPB reserve at Minsmere, external of a purple swamphen, which has attracted lots of birdwatchers to the Suffolk coast.

Philip Lattimore has emailed us with this photograph which he took at Thale Noi wetlands reserve in Phattalung province, southern Thailand, about two hours from where he lives.

He said: "I have been many times and purple swamphens are about as common as sparrows in the average English garden.

"They aren't shy and they are easy to get close to.

"They are very distinctive birds and if you see one you won't be in any doubt."

  20. 'I was a boy racer once, but never that stupid'published at 15:48 British Summer Time 2 August 2016

Thanks to those of you who've emailed us about the 56-day ban imposed on 21-year-old Louie Howlett from Lakenheath, after he was recorded driving at 154mph on the A11 in April.

Mel Wadds writes: "Why on earth was this young driver only disqualified for such a short period of time? The prosecution should appeal!"

    Bury St Edmunds magistrates court

Steven Balance says: "Police chiefs say it's 'disgraceful' about the driver doing 154 mph. What IS disgraceful is the 56 days ban he got. I had a slight, 10 second seizure a month ago and was told I couldn't drive for 6 months in case I caused an accident. Although after tests, nothing was found to be wrong, I had to surrender my licence. That IDIOT should be banned for at least a year, then ordered to resit his driving test. Whoever gave him the 56 days should be forced to see deaths caused by speeding drivers. It might teach them a thing or two, or do they live on a different planet?"

Mat Oliver says the ban is "ludicrous": "Surely a county's highest ever recorded speed deserves to be made an example of? A 12-month ban minimum would have been more appropriate, and as he is 21, made to retake his test. One wonders, given the high cost of insurance on this vehicle, how he managed to get covered at that age. I was a boy racer once, but never that stupid."
