The original Buttermarket opened in 1992 and offered an interesting contrast to the neighbouring 15th Century Ancient House - one of Ipswich's landmark buildings.

The shopping centre certainly had a distinctive look, but 20 years after opening many of the retail units behind the glass facade were empty - and the food court had closed down.

The Vue chain was given planning permission in 2012 to build a new cinema at the Buttermarket, but the plans were later shelved.
However, the centre was eventually sold for £9.2m in 2015, and the refurbishment was under way soon after.

The first restaurants, Prezzo, Coast to Coast and Cosy Club are now open as part of the £35m revamp. Wagamama, Byron, Empire cinema and a gym are to follow.
