    This looks like a typical scene from rural Suffolk, but what's being prepared is far from usual for the county.

    A temporary runway has been prepared at Rock Barracks, Woodbridge, to accommodate the huge Airbus A400M, known as the Atlas.

    The Ministry of Defence says the aircraft are undergoing "soft runway testing" at the specially-built sandy runway, having already demonstrated their ability to take-off and land on gravel and grass surfaces.

  3. Rio police 'find emails between Pat Hickey and Marcus Evans'published at 08:28 British Summer Time 24 August 2016

    Emails have been found linking International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Pat Hickey and the head of a company alleged to have illegally resold Olympic tickets, police in Rio have said.

    Police said they have uncovered emails discussing tickets between Mr Hickey and Marcus Evans, head of THG Sports and owner of Ipswich Town Football Club, dating back to 2010.

    Mr Hickey, from Ireland, was arrested last week but has not yet been charged. He has denied any wrongdoing.

    He is being held in the same cell at Bangu 10 Prison as THG Group director Kevin Mallon, who was arrested on 5 August.

    Last week, a Rio judge ordered the arrest of four more THG executives, including Mr Evans.

    THG Sports is a corporate and sports hospitality group based in London. It has previously said that allegations against it are "entirely without foundation".

    Matt Blake scored twice while Joe Francis (pictured) and Tom Winter were also on target as the Suffolk side made it four wins out of four.

    Lowestoft Town, external returned to winning ways by beating Billericay 1-0. 

    AFC Sudbury, external drew 2-2 with Wingate and Finchley at the Mel Group Stadium.

    Needham Market's, external match with Canvey Island, at Bloomfields, was abandoned at half-time due to floodlight failure.

    It's now three wins out of three for Newmarket Town in the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division, external, after last night's 2-1 victory over Thetford.

    Haverhill Rovers and Long Melford drew 1-1 at New Croft, while Walsham-le-Willows were beaten 2-0 at Gorleston.

    Stowmarket Town won 2-0 at Braintree Reserves in the First Division.

    An inquest is to open into the death of former Ipswich Town footballer Dalian Atkinson, who was Tasered by police.

    Mr Atkinson, 48, died 90 minutes after the weapon was deployed by West Mercia Police in the street where he grew up in Telford, Shropshire, on 15 August.

    It's been revealed that the man who had to be rescued by lifeguards from Beccles Lido had had a heart attack.

    Paramedics restarted the man's heart and he was stabilised at the scene. 

    He was flown by helicopter to the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital, where he's in a serious condition.

    One of the festival's directors, Matt Gaw, said: "We really hope the festival will help reconnect and remind people of the importance of stories and increase their confidence in telling them. 

    Our hope is that the festival might provide the inspiration for the creation of a true story-telling event that continues long after the weekend.”

  17. Line-up announced for this year's Festival of Ideaspublished at 17:03 British Summer Time 23 August 2016

    Jemima Foxtrot, external (pictured) and Luke Wright, external are among the line-up announced for this year's Suffolk Festival of Ideas, external, which takes place in and around Bury St Edmunds on 7-8 October.

    The festival includes mass participation story-telling, performance poetry, music and workshops.

    A large part of the festival will be given over to the sharing of tales from the communities of Bury St Edmunds, with free workshops for non-performers to build confidence and learn how to tell their stories.

    There'll also a 'story shed' at Lackford Lakes - we'll tell you about that next.

    The last remaining independent bookshop in Bury St Edmunds is to close at the end of the year.

    Stephen Cook, who runs Churchgate Books, external, says there's been a rapid decline in business: "The number of people that I have as my customer base is declining as my customers get older.

    "The people that are coming along to replace them are quite likely to look things up online rather than having a reference book and so on. 

    "I'm not going to point a finger of blame, I just think that time moves on."

  19. Beccles Lido closes after man rescued from the poolpublished at 16:29 British Summer Time 23 August 2016

    Beccles Lido, external has been closed after a man was rescued from the pool by lifeguards and taken to hospital by the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

    The incident happened at about 14:45.

    A spokesman for the lido said: "An elderly gentleman was seen experiencing some trouble in the pool and was quickly taken out.

    "The pool will be back open tomorrow morning."

    All four of Suffolk's Ryman Premier Division clubs are in action later, with both Leiston and AFC Sudbury in with a shout at ending the day on top of the table.

    Leiston, who have won all three of their opening fixtures, take on Grays Athletic at Victory Road (pictured) while newly promoted AFC Sudbury meet Wingate & Finchley at the Mel Group Stadium.

    Needham Market, who have also made an unbeaten start, entertain Canvey Island, while Lowestoft Town will aim to return to winning ways at Billericay.
