    The conservator tasked with uncovering a mural by Carl Giles has been explaining how they go about the work.

    Bob Enwistle said: "We loosen the paint on the surface with a solvent and then I use a scalpel to slowly remove the top layer of paint.

    "Then we get down to the surface where it might be - we have to be a lot more careful about how we work."

    He said it's a delicate operation which will take a "long time, if it's going to be done properly", adding "but first of all, we've got to ascertain exactly what's here and see if there is a cartoon underneath."

    Work on trying to restore a huge mural by Ipswich cartoonist Carl Giles has begun.

    The artwork is under several layers of paint on a wall in the former Sporting Farmer/Drum and Monkey pub, which is due to be knocked down.

    Conservator Bob Entwistle, from Colchester and Ipswich Museums, external, has been to the pub to see if he can uncover a small part of the cartoon.

    He said: "We don't know how many layers of paint there are, and we don't know where the cartoon is, so the thing is to go down through all the layers, count the layers, and see if there's a layer that we think the cartoon might be."

    Ipswich Witches, external director Chris Louis believes reserve Joe Jacobs has played a major role in his side's run to the verge of the Premier League play-off semi-finals.

    "He's been a massive part of the changes that we made mid-season," said Louis. 

    "Obviously at the time Ben Barker coming in made a big difference and we mustn't forget Danyon, who's injured at the moment. 

    "We made three changes and they were all very beneficial, very positive and now we find ourselves, at this point, still in with a chance of being Premier League champions."

    We have more details on the men who appeared at Basildon Crown Court today, after a football fan was left brain-damaged following an attack in Southend last year.

    Twelve men, who were charged with violent disorder, pleaded not guilty. They were:

    • Lewis Courtnell, 33, of Stadium Road, Southend
    • Jamie Chambers, 22, of Coleman Street, Southend
    • Thomas Randall, 21, of Seaforth Avenue, Southend
    • Michael Shawyer, 30, of Belgrave Road, Leigh-on-Sea
    • Matthew Petchey, 24, of Lascelles Gardens, Rochford
    • Alexander Woods, 24, of Fairmead Avenue, Westcliff
    • Philip McGill, 31, of Hornby Avenue, Westcliff
    • Greg Allen, 28, of Artillery Avenue, Shoeburyness
    • Rhys Pullen, 20, of Bridge Road, Wickford
    • James Woods, 24, of Fairmead Avenue, Westcliff
    • Scott Nicholls, 40, of Sherwood Close, Langdon Hill

    A 13th man, Ian Young, 40, of Brightwell Avenue, Westcliff, who's accused of assisting an offender and possessing a banned weapon has also denied the charges.

    Cambridge United fan Simon Dobbin, who lives in Mildenhall in Suffolk, is still receiving treatment for his injuries.

    All of the defendants have been released on police bail and their trail is due to begin on 5 June.

    "In speedway I do not believe there's any defence," said Louis. "The only form of defence you have is attack. Ritchie [Hawkins team manager] will be asking the team to go there and win the meeting. 

    "He'll want them to come off this tie full of confidence ready for a semi-final against Somerset, who've been table-toppers all season and look fantastic."

  6. Teddy's son goes from Ipswich hopeful to Ebbsfleetpublished at 15:01 British Summer Time 30 September 2016

    In 2005, Charlie Sheringham came on as a substitute as Ipswich Town lifted the FA Youth Cup at Portman Road with a 3-2 aggregate win over Southampton.

    He was given a one-year contract, but didn't stay on at Ipswich past that.

    His more famous father Teddy Sheringham will be back in the stands as Charlie, now 28,  turns out for Kent side Ebbsfleet Utd in the FA Cup third qualifying round this weekend.

    When he was a child Charlie had watched his father score in the 1999 FA Cup final and then in the European Cup final a few days later.

    "If I'm being honest, it was a bit of a blur. I was very young and it was a hectic few days," he said.

    Former Ipswich Town, external midfielder John Wark has compared tomorrow's opponents Huddersfield Town, external to Leicester City.

    The Terriers have been the Championship's surprise package so far, and lead the way after 10 games.

    Wark told BBC Suffolk Sport: "They remind me of Leicester - they've not got a lot big names, but yet they're top of the league, and they've beaten Newcastle away so they're not mugs. 

    "I only really know Nahki Wells and Sean Scannell, but they're doing really well and it's going to be a really hard game for us."

    After more than a month on the treatment table, midfielder Jonny Williams will return to action in Ipswich Town colours this weekend.

    The Welsh international has been included in the Blues U23 squad that entertains Liverpool at Portman Road on Sunday. 

    "He'll play on Sunday and hopefully again on Wednesday if we get a game sorted out," manager Mick McCarthy confirmed.

    A consultation on controversial plans, external to ban dogs from part of Southwold Beach, between 1 March and 31 October each year, ends today.

    Daisy Williamson, secretary of the Southwold & Reydon Dog Owners' Association, external, which was set up to fight the issue, says the joy her children have had playing in the shallows with their dog has been "immeasurable" and it's "invaluable being on the beach and being able to let the dog off the lead".

    She adds that she also has sympathy with families without dogs who use the beach: "I feel half the time during the summer months it is very tricky to have a dog on the beach when it's packed" and says that a "reasonable compromise" would be a five or six-month ban.

    Waveney councillors will make a decision on the proposals in early November.

    A Felixstowe woman has called for a complete ban on balloon releases.

    Lynn Allen, who's a countryside officer with Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, external, says: "The sooner the government ban these [balloon] releases the better.

    "I'm thankful I've never actually found any wildlife tangled up in balloon ribbons, but I've seen so many pictures and it's absolutely traumatic."

    Thirteen men charged in connection with an attack on a Cambridge United football fan in Southend last year have pleaded not guilty to their charges.

    Twelve of the defendants are accused of violent disorder and appeared at Basildon Crown Court this morning. Another man has been charged with assisting an offender and possessing a banned weapon.

    Simon Dobbin, 44, who's from Midlenhall, was left with life-changing injuries following the attack outside a pub in East Street in March 2015. 

    A trial is now due to take place on 5 June 2017.

    Thirteen men are due to appear at Basildon Crown Court this morning, charged in connection with an attack on a Mildenhall man that left him needing round-the-clock care.

    Cambridge United supporter Simon Dobbin, 44 (pictured with his wife and daughter), had been watching his team at Southend in March 2015. 

    After the game he was attacked outside a pub on East Street, and suffered a serious head injury.
