Ipswich Borough Council says it's going to bring in one of its conservators to "test" part of the area where a large mural by Carl Giles is thought to be covered by two layers of paint.

The mural is in the former Drum and Monkey pub in the town, which is now closed and due for demolition.

Spokesman Max Stocker said the conservator will see if it can be restored: "If it can, we will use our best endeavours to get an art expert in, who can actually take it off. It's a very painstaking process.

"It will be fascinating to see if we can actually bring the mural back to life."

  2. More about Carl Giles's most famous characterpublished at 09:15 British Summer Time 29 September 2016

Although Carl Giles (pictured) wasn't born in Ipswich, he worked there all his adult life.

John Field, a Giles enthusiast from the town, says: "The most famous of all the Giles characters was Grandma and she was a sort of Machiavellian figure - gambling, drinking, trying to get the most money she could out of the grandchildren."

    Carl Giles

Mr Field continued: "He had to think up a basis on which to put his cartoons and he dreamt up the 'Giles Family', which I believe to be a family based in Ipswich with grandchildren, dogs and the rest of it.

"It's very important that Grandma is looking up at the window of Giles's studio on the second floor.

"That wasn't his only studio in Ipswich, but that was the one he was at for the longest length of time."

It was back in 2010 that the Grandma statue, based on the character in Carl Giles's cartoons from the Daily Express, was placed on top of a granite slab in Ipswich town centre.

The statue is positioned so that Grandma is looking up at the office window where Giles used to work - above what is now a coffee shop.

  5. Will Giles cartoon ever see the light of day again?published at 08:55 British Summer Time 29 September 2016

The cartoon was drawn on a wall at what was then the Sporting Farmer pub, now the Drum and Monkey, which is due to be demolished.

Enthusiast John Field was upset to find out the cartoon had been painted over: "I came in here to take a photograph as part of my records of his work and to my horror, it had been painted over completely black.

"Today it's white, but it was just black paint. Whether one could take away that paint, the white, then the black paint, but I suspect not."

People in the East of England are being asked to help decrease demand on the region's ambulance service.

Robert Morton, the chief executive of the East of England Ambulance Service, says there is a "huge capacity gap" between the number of calls the service receives and the number of staff it has.

"Unless you have an ambulance at every crossroad, you are not going to be everywhere within eight minutes, that's a fact of life," he said.

"We need support from the community to drive down demand. Frankly, not everybody who calls us needs us."

    Robert Morton

Bosses at the East of England Ambulance Service, external have been told they will have to do a minimum of two shifts a week responding to calls.

Speaking after today's board meeting, external, chief executive Robert Morton said it was not a "sustainable" way of working in the long term.

"Right now the priority is for us to respond to our patients, improve our response times and support our staff," he said.

"One of the ways we feel we can do that right now is to ask our managers to go out and respond.

"We recognise it's not sustainable in the long term and we recognise that there are elements of our managerial workload which simply are not going to get done, but patients and staff have to be the priority."
