James Finch, the Suffolk County councillor responsible for transport, said: "I cannot defend, and I do not intend to defend roadworks where nothing is going on.

"Having said that, if there's nothing going on, there's sometimes a reason. In other words, there's a change of problem, and they have to review what's going on.

"But I can't defend that. I don't defend that and we work extremely hard when we are doing our own roadworks to make sure that we get in, do the repairs and get out."

There were 207 complaints about roads and roadworks in the last financial year, up from 134 the year before.

The county council, which is discussing the issue today, says this was due to the slow rate at which work was being carried out by the company Kier and its subcontractors.

It also said it had made changes since April to speed up repairs and cut delays.

Kier has been asked to comment.

And there was praise for Finch from Leiston's assistant coach Tony Kinsella, who says the striker is finding his best form,

"He did well last year, he got 20 goals, he’s just beginning to form a partnership with Matt Blake," he said. "I think it’ll take time for them to get a partnership going but I think once they do, they’ll be formidable.”

Elsewhere last night, Needham Market suffered a heavy 5-1 loss at Harlow but Bury Town came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Heybridge in the Ryman One North.

    Mick McCarthy

"We’re not trying just to be solid and not score goals, because that would be bonkers. We are working at that but if you’re not conceding goals at least you’ve got a solid foundation from which to play.

"And the draws we’ve had here – have been Villa, have been Norwich and have been Brighton and, you know, they’ll all be in the top six."

Town’s next opponents on Saturday are Huddersfield Town, who went top of the Championship last night after their win over Rotherham.

"And Didsy (David McGoldrick) and the others. So when we get those back we’ll be a lot better.”
