    The final touches are being made to a statue that the Queen will unveil in Newmarket this morning.

    The statue of the Queen and a horse and mare is on the green of Birdgate Walk, at the entrance to the Rowley Mile racecourse.

    It's taken two years to plan, about nine months to sculpt and four months to cast.

    The reason there are blow torches on it is because it's been in place for a few weeks, but undercover. This has meant moisture has built up underneath, and the heat from the torches draws it out. 

    Once this is completed, it will be polished up and will be all ready for the Queen, who is due to arrive at about 11:00.

    To celebrate Her Majesty's 90th birthday and her "special relationship" with the people of Newmarket, the Queen will unveil a bronze statue of herself with a mare and foal at the entrance to the Rowley Mile racecourse.

    She'll also formally open the £15m National Heritage Centre for Horseracing and Sporting Art.   

    Rachel Hood, former Mayor of Newmarket came up with the idea of the statue, which will be on Birdcage Walk at the top of the High Street.

    "It's been in place for about six weeks and as we're speaking it's being unwrapped and polished. It's quite a well-kept secret," she said. 

    "It's 120% lifesize and in bronze and we hope people are going to think it's as beautiful as we think it is."

    This is how the Queen's day in Newmarket is looking:

    • The Queen is due to arrive in the town at about 11:00
    • Her Majesty's first job is to unveil a statue featuring herself with a foal and mare, at the gateway to Newmarket on the green of Birdcage Walk. The statue is a gift to the town to celebrate the Queen's 90th birthday and her lifetime dedication to thoroughbred horses
    • At about 11:25, she will then go to the National Heritage Centre for Horseracing and Sporting Art
    • There she will tour the facilities, view displays in the new galleries (horseboxes) containing exhibitions such as the history of Tattersalls
    • Next up is a visit to Trainers' House, viewing paintings and meeting benefactors and staff before formally opening the centre 
    • Finally she'll tour Palace House, where she'll be viewing paintings in the collection

    Newmarket jockey Frankie Dettori says it's going to be a special day as the Queen visits the town to unveil a statue and open the National Heritage Centre for Horseracing and Sporting Art, external.

    "We're very, very lucky that our number one monarch is so keen on our sport."

    Excitement is building in Newmarket this morning as the Queen is coming to the town to unveil a statue of herself with thoroughbred horses, before officially opening the National Heritage Centre for Horseracing and Sporting Art. 

    The royal visit will also see the Queen taking a trip along Newmarket High Street.

    2016 marks 350 years of horseracing in the town. 

    The honour of presenting The Queen with a posy has been given to five-year-old school girl, Darcy.

    Newmarket Town were the biggest winners, thumping Cornard United 6-1. 

    Kirkley & Pakefield beat Needham Market's Reserves 6-2, it finished Whitton United 2 Walsham le Willows 3 and Ipswich Wanderers saw off Wivenhoe 2-1.

    A USAF pilot has been suspended from flying after breaking the sound barrier over Norwich, RAF Lakenheath has confirmed.

    Earlier this afternoon people reported hearing a loud explosion over the city, with comments on social media describing houses and windows shaking after the sonic boom

    There are restrictions on flying over populated areas and jets are not supposed to break the sound barrier. 

    A short time ago a spokesman confirmed that an F-15C Eagle assigned to the 48th Fighter Wing at RAF Lakenheath, external had been flying over East Anglia.   

    He added: "The pilot will receive additional training to prevent this in the future, and will not fly again until this training is complete.

    "We offer our sincerest apologies for any disturbance this may have caused, and we will continue to emphasize airspeed restrictions in flight briefings."

    Leaflets are to be delivered to homes in Bury St Edmunds to try to encourage residents with information about missing airman Corrie Mckeague to come forward. 

    The serviceman was last seen in Brentgovel Street around 03:25 on 24 September after a night out with friends.

    It has been suggested that he had tried to walk back to his base at RAF Honington, but despite an extensive search, there has been no trace of him.

  13. Man missing from low secure hospital unitpublished at 17:21 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2016

    Police want to find a man convicted of robbery and possession of a firearm after he failed to return to a low secure hospital ward in Foxhall Road in Ipswich. 

    John Gladstone, 34, was on what's termed as "town leave" early yesterday morning, but did not return as required by 15:30.

    Gladstone is currently subject to a detention under the Mental Health Act and is on a life licence following his convictions.

  14. Former inmate unsurprised by levels of violence in prisonspublished at 17:09 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2016

    Crisis talks have been taking place today after the Prison Officers Association, external were to take unofficial action over levels of violence in jails. 

    Nationally 65 assaults take place every day.

    Former inmate Jermaine James - who told BBC Suffolk he was sentenced to 22 years for crimes including shooting a police officer, and who is now a consultant on the criminal justice system - is unsurprised by the number of assaults.

    He said 30 years ago the crimes were the same but today sentences have almost doubled, putting prisoners under more pressure. 

    "..suicide is almost a coping mechanism to get away from the harsh reality of their circumstances," he said.

  15. Redbridge player fined over AFC Sudbury match assaultpublished at 15:53 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2016

    A non-league footballer has to pay fines and costs of more than £1,000 after spitting at fans and punching a steward in the face.

    Redbridge FC's William Drake, 27, also let off a fire extinguisher after being sent off in a Ryman League match at AFC Sudbury in February.

    He admitted a string of offences when he appeared at Ipswich Magistrates' Court earlier.

    As he left court Drake, of Canning Town in London, said: "I'm very sorry for what I've done."

    A man's been charged in connection with an armed robbery at a convenience store in Garrick Way, Ipswich, on Monday night.

    The 25-year-old has been charged with robbery, and with threatening a person with a blade or sharply pointed article in a public place.

    Police have also charged a 29-year-old man with two counts of robbery, relating to incidents at a convenience store in Austin Street, Ipswich, on Saturday evening, and a store in Bridge Street in the town on Sunday night.

    A woman who was also arrested in connection with the two weekend robberies has been released on bail until 5 December.
