Traffic isn't normally allowed here, but they've made an exception for the royal limousine.

The Queen really does look lovely in pink, and school children from All Saints Primary School have been singing God Save The Queen to her.

Hundreds of people are here to meet her.

That's the view of the director of the National Horse Racing Museum which is being officially opened after its move from the High Street by the Queen today.

The new building at the Palace House and Stables details the town's 350 years of history with horseracing and breeding.

Graham Snelling says people visiting may not ever see a horse despite there being over 2,000 animals in and around the town.

"We probably undersell ourselves in Newmarket. It's probably more famous internationally than it is in its own country," he said.

"If you were to see a world map of racecourses it would almost look like a colonial map but it all comes back to Newmarket and that's one of the stories we tell in the new museum."

  20. Bacon butties at Palace House ahead of Queen's visitpublished at 10:15 Greenwich Mean Time 3 November 2016

    Luke Deal
    BBC Radio Suffolk

I'm set up and ready for the Queen's visit at the back of Palace House (pictured below) and have just been handed a bacon buttie to keep me going.

Colin Noble, leader of Suffolk County Council, has joined me and has been telling me how he used you run around the old "spooky house" as a youngster, which is not too far away from the newly-refurbished racing yard where I'm standing.

He said: "I used to run outside, so this was a derelict yard, and the house was just basically falling down, so it's absolutely wonderful to be here today and see over the last 10-15 years all the work that's gone into making this the special place that it is.

    Palace House rear

"We've got the Queen opening it and it's just a wonderful thing for Newmarket.

"What I say to people is whether you just like a flutter on the big race or whether you just want to go to one of the Newmarket Nights and see some great racing and then one of the top bands, you can make a day of it now.

"You can come here to the museum, you can see horses being rehabilitated, you can come and understand the bloodstock, you can go into Palace House and see a nation's worth of racing art, and then you can go off and have a beautiful day's racing."
