    If the number of carrier bags people are holding is anything to go by, they're not just browsing but buying as well which is good news for business.

    A fire at a property in Ipswich may have left those responsible for starting it with some burn injuries, police say.

    They were contacted by the fire service shortly before 19:30 last night, and say it appears the front door of a property in Montgomery Road had been set alight - but that a passing member of the public managed to put the fire out using an extinguisher.

    Detectives who are exploring possible motives for the incident say everyone at the property managed to get out safely via the back of the home.

    Suffolk police have told us the Felixstowe-bound carriageway has been completely closed as emergency services deal with a crash involving two lorries on the Orwell Bridge.

    A police spokeswoman said one lane had reopened for about 10 minutes but has since been closed to clear-up leaking fluids and debris.

    It is not thought anyone was seriously hurt.

    Highways England say disruption around the Orwell Bridge in Ipswich is set to continue until between 15:45 and 16:00.

    It warned of congestion between junctions 56 and 57 on the Felixstowe-bound carriageway.

  8. Orwell Bridge crash: What we know so farpublished at 13:58 Greenwich Mean Time 29 December 2016

    We've just heard more details from Suffolk police on the crash on the Orwell Bridge in Ipswich.

    Police say ambulances are en route to the scene and the nature of any injuries caused to those involved is currently unknown.

    The crash is believed to involve two lorries.

    Slip roads joining the Felixstowe-bound A14 at Wherstead and Copdock are about to be closed, a police spokeswoman said.

    An eighth arrest has been made in connection with a double stabbing.

    Two men were seriously injured on Foundation Street in Ipswich on 18 December.

    Suffolk Police arrested a 26-year-old man from Ipswich yesterday on suspicion of attempted murder and conspiracy to supply controlled drugs. 

    The man has been bailed to return to police on 28 February.

    Seven other people are also on police bail pending further inquiries.

    Of the 6,849 calls taken by the East of England Ambulance, external over Christmas, the highest number was received in Essex.

    Sandy Brown, director of nursing and clinical quality, said: "Going into the weekend and the New Year celebrations, people need to be mindful that the consequences of over-doing it are avoidable with just a bit of care. 

    "Soft drinks and square meals, plenty of hydration, and avoiding being out in the freezing temperatures will make all the difference and prevent people from starting 2017 in hospital.”

    It's been another busy festive season for our ambulance staff.

    Three control rooms at the East of England Ambulance Service, external handled 6,849 calls between 19:00 GMT on Christmas Eve and 23:00 GMT on Boxing Night. 

    That's almost 800 more than the same period last year.

    This year saw 3,624 calls handled on 27 December alone, compared to 2,846 in 2015.

    Sandy Brown, director of nursing and clinical quality, thanked frontline staff “in the midst of unprecedented demand”.

    “These spikes in demand are experienced nationally and are hard to explain," he said. "But as we see colder weather affect people who are vulnerable, we do urge people to use their common sense - try to minimise risks so something doesn't worsen and then need emergency treatment.”

    Ed Sheeran is appealing the decision to refuse planning application for a cartlodge at his home near Framlingham, on the grounds that an original cartlodge, a type of timber-framed shelter, on the site was demolished.

    In the appeal document, Sheeran's agent Laurie McGee said: "With the loss of the original cartlodge to make way for the swimming pool extension, the homeowner requires a cartlodge to replace it."

    The planned grey slate structure would be located at the end of a private driveway and would be out of view from the road and surrounding buildings. 

    It was originally turned down by Suffolk Coastal District Council which said it would be "an incongruous feature in the countryside". 

    The planning authority has advised the planning inspectorate to dismiss the appeal. 

    It maintained it would cause "considerable harm" and be "detrimental" to the surrounding area.

    Singing superstar Ed Sheeran has appealed against a decision to refuse "incongruous" parking plans at his countryside home.

    Suffolk Coastal District Council, external rejected the plans for a 1.5-storey cartlodge at the pop star's house near Framlingham in July, as first reported in the East Anglian Daily Times, external, saying the proposed building would "present a creeping domestication of the surrounding area".

  16. Increased demand for ambulance service over Christmas periodpublished at 11:44 Greenwich Mean Time 29 December 2016

    Almost 900 calls were made to the East of England Ambulance Service by patients in the county over the Christmas period. 

    Between 19:00 on Christmas Eve through to 23:00 on Boxing Day, the control rooms handled 880 calls from Suffolk - an increase from the 810 made over the same period last year. 

    On 27 December, controllers received 494 calls, an increase compared to 396 in 2015.

    Ambulances

    Across the East of England, the ambulance service handled 6,849 calls over the Christmas weekend, a rise of 828 compared to the same period last year.

    Director of Nursing and Clinical Quality Sandy Brown says the spikes in demand are hard to explain, but were experienced nationally.

    Helmingham Hall , externalwill be welcoming the Antiques Roadshow when it makes a return visit to the county in August.

    Presenter Fiona Bruce says she's looking forward to visiting the property near Stowmarket: "Moated manor houses are something I particularly love.

    "I was lucky enough quite early on in my tenure to get rowed round a moated manor house by the lord of the manor. 

    "That was really jolly."

    Among the places the programme has visited in the county in the past are Somerleyton Hall, external near Lowestoft and Kentwell Hall, external in Long Melford.
