The club said the 26-year-old trained with his new team-mates this morning, but is not eligible for tomorrow's FA Cup trip to Lincoln.
Spence began his career at West Ham, represented England at under-21 level, and was at MK Dons until the summer.
He was a free agent.

There's a warning today of further landslides on Suffolk's coastline, after a dog walker died in Thorpeness at the weekend.
In Pakefield, near Lowestoft, walkers have been avoiding going close to the base of the cliffs, where there have been landslides along a 100m (328ft) stretch.

Three possible route options for a northern by-pass in Ipswich have been published, external.
A northern route (shown in purple) could run from the Beacon Hill junction at Coddenham to the A12 at Melton, while the other two options run from the A14 Claydon junction to the A12 at either Woodbridge or Martlesham.
Ipswich MP Ben Gummer says it could take years for the road to become a reality: "You need to find a route, you need to buy the land, you need to get the permissions, there'll doubtless be a public inquiry.
"It takes a very, very long time to build roads in this country and nothing I or anyone else can do will change that."
Inquests have opened into the deaths of 30 holidaymakers from the UK, including two men from Suffolk, who were killed at a Tunisian resort in June 2015.
