    Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy says he is "ambitious as ever" ahead of the forthcoming season.

    As we've reported, the club's players have returned to their Playford Road training base.

    There are just six weeks left before their opening clash at Portman Road against Birmingham City.

    Mick McCarthy said they "all want to get promoted" and to put what was a lacklustre 2016/17 season behind them.

    "I'm not bothered about proving people wrong, I probably didn't think they were right in the first place," he said.

    "I'd like to be in charge of a team that plays better football, which we have done over the past four years prior to last season."

  2. Two people dead after Lowestoft house firepublished at 14:41 British Summer Time 26 June 2017

    Two people have died in a house fire in Lowestoft, police have confirmed.

    As we've been reporting, flames broke out at the property in Stanley Street just after 01:00 this morning.

    Two people were rescued by firefighters and taken to the James Paget Hospital in Gorleston, Norfolk.

    Suffolk Police, external said they both died a short time after they arrived at hospital.

    A police and fire investigation into the cause of the blaze is under way and a cordon is currently in place at the scene.

    Motorists face disruption once again as road closures are put in place close to Ipswich Station.

    Anglian Water, external is making £800,000 worth of upgrades to sewer works.

    Ranelagh Road, between the junctions of Ancaster Road and Princes Street, is closed as part of initial works from today.

    It comes just under two months after roads in the area were closed for seven weeks while Suffolk County Council, external updated traffic lights and National Grid, external installed a new gas main.

    The initial works are expected to take six weeks to complete.

    Regan Harris, from Anglian Water, said they were planning to complete the work "as quickly as possible" and "get things back to normal".

    The remaining works will take place on Gippeswyk Park, Ancaster Road, Princes St, Commercial Road and Cardinal Park later this year.

    A scheme to improve tidal barriers and walls in north Suffolk has taken a step forward after £10m for the project was signed off.

    The funding towards the Lowestoft Flood Risk Management Project (LFRMP) has been approved by the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), external.

    It forms part of the £32m needed for the scheme. Further funding will come from Anglian Water, the Regional Flood and Coastal Committee, Suffolk County Council, the government’s Flood & Coastal Risk Management Grant in Aid and Waveney District Council, which will manage the project.

    Mark Pendlington, chair of New Anglia LEP, said: "This is a vital project with far reaching benefits. It will offer security to residents and businesses already living and trading in Lowestoft and unlock its vast potential for further economic growth."

    Work on the project is due to start in July 2018 and be completed by September 2020.

    Ed Sheeran has taken to social media to defend his Glastonbury performance after he was accused of miming and performing to a backing track.

    The Framlingham singer closed the festival with a headlining slot on the Pyramid Stage last night.

    While many took to Twitter to praise the 26-year-old, some were confused by his use of a loop pedal, claiming he had been playing along to a "backing track" and "miming".

    Sheeran has used a loop pedal throughout his career. It enables him to create layering and playback in real time, with sounds and vocals repeated for effect.

  12. 'Fantastic' Orwell Walk raises £110k for charitiespublished at 11:10 British Summer Time 26 June 2017

    Almost 800 people walked, ran and rode the Orwell estuary yesterday in aid of good causes.

    The annual Orwell Walk, external raised more than £110,000 for various charities.

    Organised by the Ipswich East Rotary Club, external, this year's event included a 26-mile marathon trail which saw 100 runners take on the challenge.

    Suffolk Wildife Trust, pictured with BBC Radio Suffolk presenter and Rotarian Mark Murphy, donned hedgehog masks as it continued to raise awareness for the challenges faced by the mammal.

    Neighbours living near a house where a fire broke out, leaving two people in a serious condition, have described the moment they raised the alarm.

    As we've been reporting, two people have been taken to hospital in a serious condition after a blaze broke out at a property in Stanley Street, Lowestoft, just after 01:00.

    A cordon has been put in place at the front of the property and a police presence is at the scene.

    Neighbour Brenda Durrant said: "Five past one and I could smell smoke and I looked out of the window and there was all the bottom part of the kitchen alight."

  14. Ed knocks 'em dead in redpublished at 09:29 British Summer Time 26 June 2017

    Ed Sheeran brought Glastonbury's Pyramid Stage to a joyous close last night just six years after his debut at one of the festival's smallest venues.

    In 2011, the star played the BBC Introducing stage and the solar-powered Croissant Neuf stage, playing "to about 500 people".

    Here he is (above) playing his only single at that time and judging by the number of phones in the air, he drew a significantly larger crowd this time.

    The 26-year-old, who was being watched by the likes of David Beckham and Posh Spice at the side of the stage, admitted he was "very nervous but very excited" to be there.

    He said: "For those of you who haven't seen one of my shows before or haven't heard one of my songs, please pretend that you know them," he told the audience.

    "For those of you who have, please sing all of the words."

    But how did he fare with the critics?

    The Guardian gave Ed's "thrilling raw and defiantly alone", external show four stars.

    The Telegraph went one better and said: "the unlikely star provided a wonderful end to a wonderful Glastonbury.", external

    The Independent were less impressed however, calling Ed "one of the least satisfying headliners in recent memory.", external

    Refunds will be given on a "case by case basis" after complaints were made about a pop concert held at Newmarket Racecourse.

    About 22,000 people attended the Little Mix concert on Friday night which left parents "angry" and "disgusted".

    Chloe Price, who was there with her eight-year-old daughter, said there were "drunk people standing over children and throwing up".

    She said a seven-year-old girl lost her tooth and a nine-year-old was glassed in the face. She posted a photo of her daughter covered in bruises.

    Amy Starkey, managing director at the racecourse, has apologised to anyone whose experience on Friday night "did not live up to their expectations".

    She said they had 14 police officers and a record number of security and safety stewards.

    "Sometimes people behave in a way which I don't think is acceptable and we deal with them," she said.

    "We did eject some people from the racecourse on Friday night, no arrests were made and we do operate zero tolerance."

    Ipswich Town's, external players return for pre-season training this morning ahead of the 2017/18 Championship season.

    New signing Joe Garner will be part of the group after joining from Rangers recently, but there will be no Tommy Smith after his exertions for New Zealand at the Confederations Cup, external.

    Smith played in Saturday's 4-0 defeat to Portugal. It's been a miserable couple of weeks for the All Whites, who lost all three of their matches in Russia, to finish bottom of Group A.

    Smith played every minute of his country's involvement, while Town teammate Monty Patterson made two substitute appearances.

    Town's first friendly is away to Irish side Drogheda a week on Saturday, 8 July.

    Suffolk's, external cricketers fell at the first hurdle in yesterday's Unicorns East T20 in Bury St Edmunds, beaten by four runs by Cambridgeshire in the first match of the day.

    "It (168) was probably a few too many to chase," admitted Suffolk captain Adam Mansfield (pictured).

    "We bowled well to start off with but then we didn't really bowl to our plans towards the end which was disappointing.

    "The boys at the top of the batting order got us off to a brilliant start, but towards the end the pressure builds and you play shots that normally you wouldn't."

    The event was won by Bedfordshire, who beat Cambridgeshire by seven wickets in the final.

    Suffolk hockey player Harry Martin scored twice as England beat Malaysia 4-1 to finish third at the World League Semi-Final, external in London.

    It means Bobby Crutchley's side qualifies for the World League Final, having already secured their World Cup berth.

    Fellow former Ipswich school-boy George Pinner was in goal for England.

    The event was won by the Netherlands, who hammered Olympic champions Argentina 6-1 in the final.
