    BBC Local Live, York

University of Leeds researchers in Tadcaster are trying to find out how to breed the perfect pig.

The university's been given £3m of government funding for its specialist farm in Tadcaster, which will monitor how piglets grow.

Hannah Davis, a PhD student involved in the project, says they're going to follow every area of individual pigs' development:

Professor Helen Miller, director of the University Farm, says: "We are making the investment to create new knowledge which will benefit both British pigs and the pig industry.

"One of the areas we will study in this new facility is how to improve outdoor sow nutrition to maximise the well-being and productivity of individual animals.

"This should also result in improved profitability, providing significant support for individual farmers and for larger businesses across the rural economy."

The 18th century Grade II-listed bridge at the heart of the town partially collapsed following the Boxing Day floods in 2015 which badly hit parts of North and West Yorkshire.

Earlier this month, the council admitted the repair work wouldn't be finished until the end of January rather than Christmas as was originally planned, blaming the delay on "unusual and persistent" high river levels.

It was later discovered the main cause for this was damming of the River Wharfe by Network Rail some distance downstream at Ulleskelf for work on a railway bridge.

  4. Listen: 'Worth giving a go' - Local residents invest in 'world's biggest' potash minepublished at 10:17 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2016

    BBC Radio York

The firm behind plans for what's been described as the world's biggest potash mine in North Yorkshire is due to find out later if it's managed to raise about £1bn to pay for its first phase.

The scheme's attracted much local interest, including Chris Hadley who co-owns a Whitby fish and chip restaurant and who says it was worth investing because it's on the doorstep:

Sirius claims the scheme will create more than 1,000 jobs, but opponents say it will damage the landscape and wildlife.

Plans include building a minehead at Dove's Nest Farm, Sneaton, with shafts 4,921ft deep.

It aims to initially produce 10 million tonnes of fertilizer per year, rising to 20 million tonnes subject to council approval.
