  2. Listen: 'Floods not expected in York' - Environment Agencypublished at 08:37 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2016

    Georgey Spanswick
    Presenter, BBC Radio York

After another anxious night for people living by rivers in North Yorkshire water levels are now dropping, according to the Environment Agency.

There are currently three flood warnings in place across our county: on the River Swale at Kirby Wiske, the River Ouse at Naburn Lock and on the River Esk at Ruswarp.

In York, the Foss Barrier has been used for the first time since pumps were upgraded following last year's Christmas floods.

I've been speaking to Neil Longden, from the Environment Agency, who says some rivers are swollen and ground is saturated but it's generally an "improving situation".

He does, though, say people should "remain vigilant":

  3. 'Increasing concerns' over missing walkerpublished at 08:19 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2016

Police say they're "increasingly concerned" for the safety of a 62-year-old woman who's been reported missing, external after going walking in North Yorkshire.

Kathryn Summersgill was last seen leaving her Renault Clio at Buckden car park at about 09:25 on Friday 18 November. She was reported missing by friends on Monday.

Ms Summersgill recently moved to North Yorkshire from Worcester and she also has links with Ilkley in West Yorkshire.

She's believed to be a keen walker and is known to visit the Yorkshire Dales regularly so has a "good knowledge" of the area, according to police.

But with the recent weather and low temperatures, police say they fear for her safety.

She's known to walk three main routes from Buckden:

    • Buckden-Cray Gill-Yockenthwaite-Lamgstrothdale-Buckden
    • Buckden-Redmire Woods-along the River Wharfe to Starbottom-Buckden
    • Buckden-through Rakes Wood to the lead mine at Buckden Ghyll-Starbottom-Buckden

Anyone with any information about Ms Summersgill's whereabouts is asked to contact police.

What a week it's been weather-wise, but it seems we might have got away with it in many parts of North Yorkshire.

The Ouse peaked overnight in York at a height of 3.25m, and the Foss Barrier in the city has been used for the first time since pumps were upgraded following last year's Christmas floods.

In Tadcaster, they were pumping out the car park of Tadcaster Albion last night, although that game did go ahead.

Meanwhile, there are still three flood warnings and 11 lower level flood alerts in place.

In Sleights the main road the A169 is still closed after a landslip, though that may re-open later.

There's also been a landslip on the A1039 Filey Road at Muston, but that road has now re-opened.

    BBC Travel

Most of the roads are running smoothly this morning in North Yorkshire, it seems, but two roads are closed in the county due to landslips.

The A1039 Filey Road is closed in both directions between the West End junction in Muston and the North Street junction in Flixton, because of a landslip and flooding. There's a diversion in operation via Hunmanby.

Meanwhile, the A169 Blue Bank in Sleights remains closed in both directions between the Eskdaleside junction and the Lowdale Lane junction because of a landslip

The landslip followed torrential rain on Sunday night and saw gravel from an escape road next to the carriageway washed out because of the large amount of water running down the bank.

Trains in and out of York Railway Station are currently running to schedule, according to the station's live departure board, external.

    Sarah Urwin
    Political Reporter, BBC Radio York

More now on the Ryedale anti-fracking campaigners who have taken their case to the High Court today.

A judge is being asked to rule whether North Yorkshire County Council made the right decision by giving the go-ahead earlier this year to fracking at Kirby Misperton, near Pickering.

I've been in Kirby Misperton today where feelings are running high.

Philip Tate, a member of Frack Free Ryedale, told me that even if the judge rules in favour of the council, he'll keep fighting:

Twelve people from Ingleton in North Yorkshire who were killed in England’s worst pit disaster are to be commemorated in a sculpture to be unveiled next May.

Twelve of those who died had travelled to work in Barnsley from North Yorkshire, and many were from the same family.

Work to clear the A169 Pickering to Whitby road, which is blocked at Blue Bank in Sleights, is continuing following torrential rain yesterday and overnight.

A number of properties were flooded, vehicles abandoned and large amounts of debris, mainly from the gravel trap, blocked the carriageway.

  18. Ryedale fracking challenge: Climate change concerns raised at High Courtpublished at 13:50 Greenwich Mean Time 22 November 2016

    Mike Kemp
    Reporter, BBC Radio York

A judge at the High Court in London has been hearing from a lawyer acting for Frack Free Ryedale and Friends of the Earth, who are challenging last May's decision by county councillors to give the go-ahead to fracking at Kirby Misperton near Pickering.

    Protest

During the morning, David Wolf QC picked over the planning officer's report which went to county councillors setting out the details of the fracking application.

He highlighted areas where he believed the issue of climate change hadn't been addressed fully, focusing on the lack of CO2 emission data.

This is one of the grounds campaigners say makes the approval decision unlawful.

The case is expected to continue for the rest of today and into tomorrow.

  20. North Yorkshire's role in Hockney-designed Westminster Abbey windowpublished at 13:36 Greenwich Mean Time 22 November 2016

    Andrew Barton
    BBC Local Live, York

One of Britain's greatest living artists, Yorkshire's David Hockney, is to design a stained glass window for Westminster Abbey, which will then be made in North Yorkshire.

Bradford-born Hockney says he's planning to create "a landscape full of blossom" for the Queen's Window, to mark the opening of the Abbey's new Diamond Jubillee Gallery in 2018.

    Westminster AbbeyImage source, Alys Tomlinson

Hockney will largely have artistic control, but be given guidance from the Dean and Chapter and the Westminster Abbey Fabric Commission who deal with changes to the historic building.

An Abbey spokesman says: "He's given a very elliptical hint. We're as interested as everyone else to see what he comes up with.

"He will have pretty much free rein because he's David Hockney."

Once the design is finished, it will then be transferred into stained glass by the Barley Studio at Dunnington, near York.
